Buy, register, or rent a pump?

This is my 1st baby and I plan on BFg.  So I'm wondering, should I register for a pump?   I SAH but I do plan on eventually using a bottle so MH can do some feedings and we can have the occasional evening out.

So I'm just wondering what people recommend.  Register for one?  Rent one from the hospital and if BFg/pumping works out then buy one?  Another option I'm not thinking of?

I  have checked w/ our insurance company and they will not cover a pump under our policy, so that's not an option.

Re: Buy, register, or rent a pump?

  • I pumped for 2 weeks while also BFing because my baby was a preemie and I wanted to keep my supply up and I rented from the hospital and got a really high quality one which I heard makes a huge difference because no pump does as good a job and a baby.

I don't know about registering but I would rent one before you buy one  because if you're staying home and planning on Bfing you may hate pumping and decide it's not worth it.

Like I said, I pumped for 2 weeks and then never again. It was such a pain and I was happy to get up all night and BF rather than pump. But, of course, that's just my opinion.

But I wouldn't outright buy before your baby's born.

ETA: I breastfed until DS was 17 1/2 months old.

ETA: I BF until DS was 17 1/2 months old.

    Baby #3 on the way!

  • Because I planned to BF for at least a year, it didn't make sense for me to rent one. I waited until DS was about 2 weeks old to make sure my milk came in fine and (although I was extremely committed to BFing) also to make sure this was something that would work out for us. I started pumping right after I got it to build a freezer stash for when I went back to work. You could register for one and if you don't receive one just go buy one. GL!
  • How long do you plan to BF/pump?  I plan on doing it for a year, so I have my own pump.  That being said, I would register for the pump because you will at least get the completion discount if no one buys it for you.   If you want to rent for a month, before purchasing, then just don't open the pump packaging so you can return it.  Also, I recommend either the Medela Pump in Style or Freestyle.
  • I hope to BF a year.
  • Most of the time, renting ends up being more expensive than just buying a good quality pump like the Medela Pump In Style, as long as you keep it for more than a couple weeks.

I also SAH and got by with just an inexpensive hand pump (mine is the Lansinoh brand but it might be discontinued). My supply was always really really good so hand pumping only took me a few minutes to get a bottle full and I had a freeze stash after just a couple weeks.

Just as a side note, I had the same plans as you but my son never took a bottle. I've nursed him exclusively for 13 months, which sounds crazy but worked out fine after we got the hang of nursing in public and side-lying night feedings. Good luck!

  • Since pumps aren't returnable it may make sense to rent initially when you leave the hospital then purchase one once you see how things go.

Are they returnable if they aren't used/package is unopened?
