Pregnant after a Loss

when did you register for birthing classes?

so in my initial paperwork, it says to call in week 20. when i asked the ob today, they told me i could wait until after 30 weeks.  any idea when you are really supposed to do this?

Re: when did you register for birthing classes?

  • I think the reason that they want you to call early on is to make sure that you get scheduled in a class.  Our hospital said the same thing (we took Bradley classes though, so we didn't take the class at the hospital) and I think you can probably wait until after 30 weeks to take the class, but I would still call early to get scheduled.

  • I started classes at 28 weeks and ended at 32 weeks and was the least pregnant one there, but I was glad that I went that early.  Just do it when you feel comfortable.
  • You want to be finished with the classes by 36 weeks (i.e., shortly before you're full term at 37 weeks).  If you're going to take a weekend/2 day class, and the classes don't fill up, you could maybe register after 30w.   Our classes start the last week in october, so right around 30w, but we're taking a 6w class.
  • Yeah, I'm kinda wondering that too- with DD I scheduled them around 31 weeks, but that was in a more rural city.  I have a feeling I'm going to need to get on that a little sooner- maybe around 26 weeks I'll start looking.
  • Our ob told us to schedule it asap, as they book up fast!  So I'm calling this week to do that. Our hospital is an hour away so we are taking the 1 day class, but it's 8 hrs I think.  It's better than driving there once a week in addition to our regular appts.
  • good question may! ?I'm asking my OB about all this kinda stuff at my appt. on Thursday. ?

  • We registered for ours at our 20 week appt. :) We don't start the class until the first week of December though.
  • We did the one day class and registered two weeks ahead of time. We took the class on Sep 28 when I was 33 weeks (I think?) so we must have registered around 30 weeks.

  • I am taking them at the end of this month, so around 29 weeks. I think that they are 6 weeks long. I registered before but they never called me to tell me that the call was full or not....

  • They fill up quickly in my area, so my Dr recommended signing up sooner than later.
  • We didn't take them since I knew I was having a scheduled c/s. But anyways, I just wanted to congratulate you for being halfway there!

  • My doctor told me the same- around 20 weeks.  But when I called to register, they told me to wait a little longer so I'd remember the techniques.  I'll probably take the class in Nov. and I'm due in Jan.
  • I registered for them when I was around 23-24 weeks, I think. I would have taken them around 30-34 weeks. The doc told me I should be finished with the labor/birthing class by 36 weeks at the latest. Other than that, I could set them up whenever I wanted. I also signed up for breastfeeding, newborn care, and infant CPR classes all around the same time. I think the latest one we had scheduled was at 37 weeks. Can't remember.

The reason they probably say to register so early is because some classes are only offered once a month or twice a month and they fill up quickly.

  • I signed up for the bradley classes around 28-29 weeks and started taking them a little past 30 weeks. We'll finish up the 8 wk session a week before my due date. Cutting it close I know but hopefully we'll finish them all before he arrives.

  • I signed up a few weeks ago and we start Oct 27 which I think I will be 27 weeks. Ours is a 7 week class though that combines childbirth and judaism traditions.
  • The ones at our hospital fill up really early.  They suggested I take the class around 28 weeks, but I needed to call ahead to register at around 18.  But my ob practice actually does one in house that doesn't fill up as fast so I got lucky.  I did still register at about 20 weeks though:)
  • The traditional bradley method series are 12 classes long (so 11 weeks total from the start to finish). Lamaze and other techniques are usually shorter (6 weeks or less).

Depending on what kind of area you live in, you also may need to register in advance.

  • We are doing a Bradley Method class and it is 12 weeks long. We are already signed up for the class because the instructor only take 5 couples. Our class starts in January (about 27 weeks).
