I'm bumfuzzled

Okay as I posted before Aubrey is cutting a her first couple of teeth...it's been a rough weekend.  We tried Hyland's Teething tablets (which work okay during the day, but at night she was so miserable those didn't work), the cold washcloth, motrin(generic kind since the recall) (at night only and that worked for her), and finally orajel.  The orajel was a heaven send for her.

Now the point of my post.  Wes told his mom about Aubrey teething Confused We don't share a lot of those kind of things with her because she overexaggerates everything and something as simple as her teething would become a HUGE issue to her.  But he told her this.  When she asked him what we were doing for her he basically just told her what I said above. Well when he got to the orajel part she literally freaked out on him.  Like began yelling at him through the phone!  I could hear her across the room!  She then told him to put me on the phone.  I didn't want to but I took it.  She proceeds to completely *itch me out saying how dumb I was to give Aubrey orajel...her reasoning was because if Aubrey swallows it it'll numb her throat and she won't be able to swallow and she'll choke on her spit...I have no words.

I am completely bumfuzzled...I have never hear of this before and I am pretty sure my MIL is off her rocker (in more ways than one)...but I am wanting to make sure.

  • It is totally safe -- the only way what she is describing could happen is if you squirt half the tube just willy nilly in her mouth.

Our pedi said as long as you put it on a swab and rub it directly on her gums, it is perfectly fine and she won't swallow enough to be harmful.

Your MIL is a piece of work!

Tell me something I don't know.  Seriously I just wish Wes hadn't said anything at all to her!

  • I hope you gave him the stink eye the whole time you were on the phone with her!!

This.  Is this woman serious??  I really can't think of anything to say, just wow.

Unfortunately yes she is serious.  She is so strange about things too.  Something as little as this she gets her panties in a wad and will bug the snot out of us about now.  But back when we had to have Aubrey tested for cystic fibrosis she acted like it was no big deal and we were making a huge deal out of nothing....she is like Sarah said a piece of work.

Figures, huh.  So sorry you are having to deal with this...my MIL did something similar when we wanted to put the car seat in the vehicle before J was born.  She flipped out and said it was bad luck or something.  Crazy.

  • well...the rumor can be true - and like Sarah said - if you use a qtip and swab just her gums it is probably OK... My pedi did recommend against it.

Instead he suggested we rub childrens liquid benedryl on her gums...and that seems to work really well.

Good luck... teething sucks.  We're going on 6 weeks of trying to get the canines to break thru...

I have found out that pedi's can recommend different things. My pedi said no benadryl until 12 months...it all gets so conflicting!  I just used a tiny amount of orajel on a swab when I used it.  Either way she has seemed pretty good today, I haven't had to do anything so far except the cold wash cloth.  I think the motrin did a lot for her last night (including letting her sleep thank goodness).

My pedi said orajel was fine. If you are worried about it, you can always give a call in to your pedi's office to double check.

If they give the go-ahead (I don't see why they wouldn't) then you can call your MIL back and tell them your DOCTOR said it was fine!
