Spitup through nose

Lily keeps spitting up out of her nose and it scares me to death.  I mentioned it to her pedi and he said its normal and DH swears our favorite neo told him it would happen too.  She only does it once a day or every other day but it seems like it takes her breath and she flails around like crazy.  If she is in her swing or bouncy she is usually screaming by the time I get to her so I know she can catch her breath back but still it freaks me out.  I suction her nose afterward and sometimes get a good bit of milk/mucous.  Anyone else have this happen and what did you do about it?

Re: Spitup through nose

  • Robbie used to do it all the time. He did it earlier this week for the first time in quite a while. The nose-puking is the worst. Robbie has extremely severe reflux so puking rarely phases him, but when it's out the nose, he flips out. He bucks and flails and cries. I think it probably burns, plus for a moment they can't breathe and it freaks them out.

It's usually worse if he's laying down when he pukes, so keeping him upright was usually the best preventative.

Also, there are things that aggravate his reflux more than others and his puking gets more violent with those.

For a while mangoes did it every time.

He still can't take anything with corn in it.

It did get better over time.

  • Oh yeah, this happened daily last week. This week it isn't so bad. I am fortunate that it doesn't phase Will. He just sits there, milk out the nose (and sometimes the mouth) and then he's on his way grunting, sleeping, or whatever he was doing before. Of course our LO is very mild tempered and only really fusses when he's really tired or hungry.
  • This used to happen to Cole all the time in the NICU. The milk would get in is oxygen tubing and under the tape.  I think it scared me more then him. I don't know how to prevent it but it seems to be a normal thing.
  • Uggh!  We had this problem with DS too!  And he wouldn't breathe for several seconds to protect his airway.  Our pedi said it was normal, but I couldn't believe that, so we asked another pedi, and then called a neonatologist.  All normal!  I invested in a ton of aspirators and I kept them everywhere, it freaked me and DH out.  All I can say is that they outgrow it!
