Houston Babies

What's your favorite small baby thing?

I know I have my own kid at home but I'm at a loss.  My friend is having a baby next month and I'm buying her baby shower gift today.  Her registry is lacking - it's either all super $$ or...well, all super $$. I think she got a lot of stuff from her SIL and they have a TON of clothes.

I want to get a few small things that she may have forgotten.  Or stuff that you "couldn't have lived without."

I'm starting with some Little Tummy's & Butt Paste, plus the Frog Luve.

Re: What's your favorite small baby thing?

  • The only thing I can remember is that I never had enough socks or washcloths.  Her socks always fell off so I always lost one of the pair and I never seemed to have a washcloth clean when I needed one.

That and a friend gave me the Gerber cloth diapers to use as a burp cloth which I loved.

Maybe get something for the Mom too?  A spa GC to use after the baby or some good smelling bath stuff and candles?

Basics like nail clippers, tylenol, bottle brush, lotion, baby wash, diaper rash cream?
  • Gripe Water, SOCKS!! =), little toys for the baby carrier/ car seat

Also i have no idea your budget....BUT We couldn't live w/o the crib aquarium...it plays music and lights up for 20mins...slowly dimming and getting quieter...DS LOVES IT!!!  It was $40

Also a cheaper option would be the Seahorse....kinda like the old school glo-worm....I think Fisher-Price makes it...its $14-17 range.  You press the tummy and it glows and sings for 5minutes.

I like to do collections of small items for baby shower gifts.  Things I've bought recently: good pre-folds for burp cloths (not the crappy ones at BRU), the Burt's Bees Baby sample pack, motherlove nipple cream (for my BFF, I probably wouldn't give that to just anyone), pacifiers, small rattles or toys,  bath toys.  I'm sure there's more....

  • I love me some Itzbeen.  I still use mine to time naps/sleep between nightwakings.

And ditto the Fischer Price Seahorse thing.  Ollie loves his.

I was going to recommend the Itzbeen, too.  I used that damn thing so much for nursing that the buttons were worn off.  Kept it by my side at all times, especially when she was a newborn and I was a milk machine.

  • For the moms who kind of have it all already, I will put together a gift of feeding items for them to use when they get older like the bumpkin bibs, utensils, travel containers, nubby handled sippie cups, the mesh feeder thingy - stuff like that.

Diapers and wipes may not be exciting to all but they are always a good gift as far as I'm concerned :-)

  • DD loves her Glo Seahorse and has since birth.  Everytime we would lay her down to change her diaper we would turn the Glo Seahorse on.  SHe would just stare at it.  She is grabbing for it now.

Diapers are always good, in different sizes and even brands.  That way they can try out different ones to see what they like.

I like the idea of the older baby feeding supplies.

Funny.  I used mine all the time for the first 2 months and then quit.  He started STTN and I fed on demand so I just found myself not using.  But those first 2 months I didn't even go to the store without it in my diaper bag!

  • I was going to recommend the seahorse as well.  Also, you can never have too many diapers and wipes.  We also have a ton of washcloths and use them all, seems you can never have too many of those either.

Yeah, when he starts STTN I'll probably stop using mine too.

And yes, that is a very thinly veiled vent.
