allergic reaction to antibiotic??

Okay, I'll try to keep this short!!

About 2 weeks ago, DS got an ear infection. He was on amoxocillin for 10 days. Friday when I picked him up from daycare, he had a fever of 103.5. We had just finished the antibiotic, so I took him to emergency care - they diagnosed him with an ear infection. Apparently, the amoxocillin didn't do anything. They prescribed arithromycin, which I gave to him Friday night and Saturday night, then yesterday he broke out in a rash all over - worse on arms, legs, feet, and face, but also on his torso and back some. Obviously, we stopped giving it to him and DH is taking him back to the doc today. Has anyone experienced this? I'm assuming it's a mild allergic reaction to the arithromycin. The rash doesn't seem ot be bothering him at all, but it looks awful!

Re: allergic reaction to antibiotic??

  • DH is allergic to amoxocillin anything with the "cillin" in it really. He had a reaction similar to that as a child.  Never bothered him other than that and since there are so many antibiotics out there, he just tells the dr hes allergic and gets a different one.  Thats what it sounds like it is though.

  • DD is allergic to amoxycillin. We found out b/c she also had an ear infection. the 2nd drug they gave her did absolutely nothing and infection spread to the 2nd ear. it was the 3rd one (sorry, I'm blanking on names) that actually worked but it was a tough couple of weeks.

    hope he feels better soon!!

  • Definitely, that's what happens when I take anything in the penicillin family.

That's the same reaction I get to sulfa based drugs, diagnosed the same way as your DS as a baby. I still can't take them. There are lots of other alternatives. My rash or hives go away within 48 hours of stoppage of the meds. Hope he feels better soon.

  • Yup - DD1 is allergic to penicillin. She didn't have any problems with her first prescription (to treat an ear infection) but the second time she had one (a few months later) she broke out into hives. DIdn't seem to bother her any, but she was covered in them - looked awful! Doc said it was allergic reaction. So now we always have to disclose that whenever she goes to the ER or a new doc or wherever. Turns out my dad is allergic to penicillin too - never knew that until I was telling my mom about DD's reaction.
