Car Seat Installation

We're going to install the car seat bases in our cars this weekend (EEEEKKK I cannot believe this is happening so fast!). My DH works with cars and is constantly taking out/putting back in car seat bases from customer's cars, so he feels pretty comfortable with their installation...my question is with newer cars, is there still the same issue with a high percentage of improper installation? My car is a 2005, DH's is a 2008, and it's really easy to install the base and car seat. Seriously, there are like some hooks and it clicks in and I'm not even sure how you could do it wrong. Did everyone get their car seat inspected by the fire department regardless?

Here's the MN portion - can you just drive up to any fire station and have them inspect your car seat? Should I call first?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Car Seat Installation

  • I know that E.P. dose it only by apt on Thursday, I would check with your local fire station, we never had it check out with his first carseat but now that he is on to this "Big Boy" one we will have that one checked

  • about 8 out of 10 car seats are improperly installed. This has not changed with the new cars, because while LATCH was supposed to make installation easier, this is not always the case.

Unless your husband has actually taken the CPST courses, just taking car seats in and out of cars does not make him an expert...in fact, many car washes, mechanics, etc take seats out that then end up improperly installed, even if they had been correct prior.

I certainly hope your DH informs customers when he uninstalls/reinstalls a seat.  I'd be furious if someone messed with my seats and didn't tell me.

I am a CPST and am willing to do house calls, if needed. But you can find a local technician at www.seatcheck.org or https://tinyurl.com/6oe32h

Did you just feel more comfortable with the installation of the bucket seats? Or did you just never get around to it?

     Thanks!

Well we never used the base in my car due to size (I have a prizum & we have a snugride 32)  I would always just seat belt his seat in. How that the seat stays in my car all the time I want to make sure it is right. The Base did "live" in DH's truck & he just keep forgetting to get it check out when he had Aiden around. We don't have "latch" systems in our cars so we only use the seat belt.

This. Wow. I really hope that when we brought our car in for service they aren't removing and reinstalling our car base without telling us.

DH works in collision repair. The only carseats he's touching are ones that have been in accidents and affected in the back seats, and the customer would be made aware that anything was touched. Unless they have a reason to, service people shouldn't be touching your carseats. I would hope not anyways! The seats DH is dealing with should be replaced anyways.

I make a point to ask now. One of the instructors during my CPST class told us that she always does now, because she found out the hard way that the car wash people had unbuckled her grandchild's seat. It fell over when she make a sharp turn on the way home. Luckily, the seat was empty...but it could have been very, very bad.

So now, unless I am within eye sight of my car at all times, I ask if they did anything to my car seat, and I always double check it's installation.

  • Speaking of which...Gopher could you inspect our convertible?  I know it's installed wrong right now (dumb DH used the forward facing latches rear facing so he's fixing that tonight).  How much do you charge and we can certainly come to you too since you're up our way?

I always ask if they touched it.  You would be surprised by the number of times I have been told 'yes'. (both with Liv and when I used to have nanny-kid carseats in my car)

I always tell the person I am talking to that they should always tell the parent if they move the seat, and I usually get looked at like a crazy alien.

Here is another site that you can find an inspection location just in case:

    https://www.nhtsa.gov/cps/cpsfitting/index.cfm

I know in Eagan it's actually the police station that does inspections and you need an appointment.
