Carpet Cleaning - chemicals around kids.. etc..

We have one room in our home that we call our 'cat's room'..  he has his litterbox in the closet and his food/water. He is an old cat, and from the way his room stinks to high heaven, we assume he sometimes misses the litterbox. Anyway, the room STINKS and I am sick of it. It's contained to the room, and DS has known from Day 1 that it's a no-kid-zone. He never even attempts to go in there bc we've drilled into him how it's a no-no.

My ? is about carpet cleaning. We're researching professional places to come out and clean... but the more I talk to, the more they all tell me that YES there are a ton of chemicals involved and anyone who tries to 'go green' with stuff like this is wasting time and money. I can see the sense in that, you need hardcore chemicals to get the stank out, of course. But is this safe? It's just the 1 room.. and he never goes in there, but I worry still about him being so close to such strong chemicals. Am I being overly concerned about this??  Advice?

  • If the room is small I'd think about tearing up the carpet, and putting down some inexpensive laminate or something.  Then a washable rug to keep the litter contained.

  • We had our carpets cleaned last month, I had them come in the morning and then we went our of town for a few days. ?Maybe you could time it up with a trip so it has time to air out?

I agree with PP, if its small you could rip it up and use those vinyl tiles.

We just had this all natural carpet cleaning service open in our town, maybe you would have something similar to you.

We did research on Stanley Steamer before using them and found they use only water and we were really happy with the results!  I've also seen local places advertise steam cleaning, but haven't looked into them...  Good Luck!

  • Research your available companies.  Alot of them have carpet cleaning products that are kid and pet safe.  Everything has chemicals on it, carpet, furniture, your food unless you buy organic.  I hate chemicals too, but I try not to get to freaked out.

Cat Pee, especially male cat pee is super hard to get rid of the smell.  Carpet cleaning might just make it worse to be honest.  I would rip up the carpet if that's an option and put down laminate or something that is easy to clean.
