Babies: 0 - 3 Months

If you pump and feed or FF

How much does your baby eat for their bedtime bottle? And do they sleep thru the night?

My DD just started eating 4 oz of pumped BM at night but she still wakes up for two feedings, usually around 2 and 4. Doc says I need to get her to eat more but how am I supposed to do that? I even tried fast flow nipples to see if I could get more into her before she fell asleep but it's not happening.

  • With DS's reflux, he never can eat more than 4oz at a time.  We usually do two bottles within 2 hours of each other.  He is up one time at most usually and sometimes will sleep through the night.

  • DS still doesn't STTN.  He is up once or twice a night to eat.  Baby 411 says that at 4 months old, your DC is capable of sleeping up to 6 hours without getting hungry.  By 6 months, they should be able to do 9 hours.  So, I wouldn't worry about your DD not STTN yet.

To get her to eat more, you could always try adding just .5 oz to each feeding.

DS still eats every 2-3 hours during the day.

  • My DD takes 4 oz of formula at night, and that gets her through 7-8 hours. ?I would ask your pedi what he recommends, because I'm pretty skeptical about force-feeding. ?If she won't take more, she just won't.
  • Well I am reading Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child and he says that the amount they eat does not affect the amount of sleep.  If she is only hungry for 4oz she should eat 4oz.  I would work on changing other things...like naps throughout the day.  The book says that after 1-2 hours of wakefulness you should help soothe your child to sleep if they haven't already.  I started doing this and I think it has helped.  My DD is 3mo and she is eatting 5oz.  She sleeps straight from 11 or 12 to 7am most of the time.

  • DS eats about 4.5 oz with every bottle and he goes down around 8-9pm and sleeps until around 4-6 am most nights, he will sometimes wake at around midnight for a bottle but then will go right back down for 4 or 5 hours.  My policy is to feed him until he is full.
