Parenting after a Loss

Do you ever forget?

What happened during the night? We've been doing Ferber for a week and finally took away his pacifier last night (it falls out/he takes it out and screams bloody murder. We're tired of putting it back in) so it was a rough start to the night. I know I fed him at midnight when he woke up for the 3rd time (and I fell asleep nursing him, something I haven't done since he was an infant). I know he was "talking" at 4a so I got up and went to the bathroom and told myself I would let him talk. Next thing I know, it's 5:30a and he's fussing. I go in and give him the pacifier so he'll sleep a little longer and when I get back to bed I think, "Did I feed him at 4a?" My boobs are pretty full and his and our door are not closed (I always close them after the last feed so the alarm doesn't wake him up) which leads me to believe I did not feed him and he talked himself to sleep-yay him, bad mommy for forgetting? We are sooo exhausted but I'm glad I figured it out in the end. Ooops!

Re: Do you ever forget?

  • Yup, I do forget. Which is why I still make a point to write everything down. I know that probably sounds dumb, but I still track when she eats, now when she sleeps and usually her diapers.  Because there have been nights I've woken up hearing her fuss and fallen back to sleep and don't remember the time or anything - I assume she fell back to sleep too, because I would have heard her, but I don't always remember.

  • Yes, that's why I still use the itzbeen timer during the night. I bedshare, so whenever he starts eating I just grab it and hit the button b/c usually we both go right back to sleep so I'd never remember!

  • All the time.  Isn't short-term memory cemented while we sleep?  I rarely get more than three hours at a time, so my detail memory is totally shot.  I used to be like an elephant in that department, too, so it's kind of disconcerting.
  • Yes I forget all the time!  It's all a blur in the middle of the night, and I fall asleep in her glider nursing all the time!  Then I wake up and think , Please GOD let her go back down in the crib without either of us waking up too much!
