Delivery at 23W

Hi! I wanted to ask if anyone could share any personal stories of successful survival outcomes for babies delivered this early. My good friend had slight spotting/bleeding after 1st tri. After numerous appt, and being told nothing is wrong, she was admitted to the hospital. She saw a peri who the next morning ordered a cerclage. She was on bedrest at home for almost 2 weeks when the bleeding came back, followed with slight contractioins. She was admitted back in the hospital and has been on strict bedrest, being monitored. Something went horribly wrong last night and she delivered her little girl, weighing 1lb1oz. She was 23w1day. The baby is stable in the NICU. I realize that chances of survival are so low but would love to hear any insight from someone who went through something similar. Thank you!

  • Wow I am so sorry for your friend. She is however lucky in the sense that they admitted her baby as you will see in a post below, many doctors do not admit before 24 weeks. Although I don't kno whow they could not admit a living baby! Anyway, sorry for the tangent. Yes, success rates are low but I am very happy to hear the baby is stable and I will send all my thoughts and prayers to this LO and your friend that she pulls through. Sounds like a fighter.

  • I have a friend whose 23w2d son is now 4 and doing exceptionally well. He has no lasting complications and was born at 1 lb. 4 oz. I will send some warm thoughts to this very LO!
  • Your friend and her daughter will be in my thoughts and prayers.  The little girl sounds like quite the fighter!  I have heard that many times girls do better than boys.  And that sounds like a good size for being so young.

  • My baby was born at 30 weeks but, there were a lot of 23 weekers in the NICU when I was there.  There are so many amazing things that can be done,
10/17/2009 - Our Miracle came 10 weeks early. IF,2 MC and 1 Preemie we have our miracle.. Baby Hope 10 weeks 5days was taken from us on Dec 18, 2007. Forever with us and Forever missed. Triplets Lost baby A @ weeks, Lost Baby B at 6 weeks and lost baby Abigail at 14 weeks when she was born to little for this life..... Forever with us ....
  • I'm so sorry that your friend had that experience :(

When we were in the NICU Charlie shared an isolation room with a baby boy born 23w1d weighing 1 lb 1 oz - the same as your friend's daughter. We are going to his first birthday party next Saturday :) But I know it wasn't an easy road for him. I'll be thinking of your friend and her family and hoping for a wonderful outcome!

  • Hugs to your friend.

Both 23wkr boys in the NICU while we were there are happy and healthy 4yr olds now :-)  Both of them spent 4 months in the NICU and came home on oxygen but no other problems to speak of.

  • I just wrote a post about micro preemies on my preemie parenting blog and I had lots of comments from parents of 23 to 25 weekers telling how well their babies are doing now.

I hope your friend's baby does very well.  Best wishes.

  • I had my daughter at 23 weeks.  Of course the doctors tell you worse case to cover their butts, but I'm happy to say Ava is doing very well!  She spent 3 months in the NICU but came home before her due date.  She did come home on oxygen & apnea monitor & has been off the O2 since 3/17.  They gave her a 10% chance and now 7 months later, she is great!!  The best piece of advice I can give is stay positive and make friends with the nurses.  The doctors will never come in and say "your LO is doing great", so the sooner you get to know the nurses and the docs, the better you can read them.  Also it will give you peace of mind when you have to leave.

I will keep your friend in my prayers!  You can PM me if you'd like to talk more or pass it on to your friend.

  • Gray-your story gives me so much hope! My friend has a 12mo old boy. In my mind, I see them celebrating R's 2 yr b-day, and K's 1st bday next April together!  So far the baby has been doing well, but you are right, the doctors will never say 'great'!
