hi-
my dh, ds (22mos.) and i are relocating to erie from providence, ri in july. we don't really know anyone in the area, and from my quick search on here, erie seems to be a bit of a parenting black hole. which unfortunately parallels my searches for whole foods, trader joe's and an ikea nearby also.
dh will be going to medical school at LECOM and my plan is to be a sahm and work on some crafting and gardening. currently, i teach drawing and painting at a public high school but i am looking forward to spending my days with ds once we move.
i guess i'm just curious if there is anyone else around with any young babes... we will be on the east side near the zoo and i was hoping to find someone interested in playdates, walks, jogging, etc... also, any recs for doctors or dentists would be super appreciated. (i had a very complicated early birth with ds, so it's probably going to need to be an ob or a midwife who works at a practice with ob's)
thanks!
Re: soon-to-be in erie mama- anyone out there?
hi there. I'm not living in Erie, but went to Mercyhurst College (right by you on the East Side). From memory, Ikea is by Millcreek Mall but I have never seen a whole foods or trader joes. I have some friends still living there so I'll check with them to see if there are any close ones.
Sorry I cannot help with a good OB practice or playdates though
Try to spend sometime at Presque Isle, you'll find lots of kids there in the summer! Erie is really nice, good luck with the move!
I've live in the area. You're right, it is sort of a parenting black hole. If you are religious at all, try some of the churches, I'm not sure how many of them have moms groups, but I'm sure some do.
The closest IKEA is in Pittsburgh, but there are a ton of stores on Upper Peach St. The best grocery store IMO is Wegmans. They have good prices and a great organic section. There is also a Whole Foods CoOp that has a big selection of organic goods. (it's on West 26th & Brown Ave.)
If your DH is going to LECOM, find a place in Millcreek, which is nearby. Stay out of the city of Erie if you want safety (there has been a rash of shootings and robberies in the last few months). The Zoo is on the West side, it's a very nice zoo for a smaller city.
The practice I used when pg with DD, was OB/GYN associates of Erie. They recently moved to a new office and there are about 8 doctors and 1 midwife in the practice.
If you want more specifics on names, just PM me. I'd be glad to help you out!
Thompson did my discharge, that was the first and only time I met him, but everyone I know who has used him really likes him. Dr. Scutella did my c-section and I had a great experience with him.
