I remember when a "What does your husband do?" poll was asked, most of us had husbands in the I.T. field.
Occasionally DH does side-work for people and his hourly rate is $45 per hour, which seems low-ish to me.
If your husbands ever do side-work, do they have an hourly rate or do they charge by project? If hourly, would you mind sharing their rate and which state you're in?
Thanks!
Re: For Those Whose Husbands are in I.T...
I imagine it depends on what he's doing for them. Teaching some yahoo how to use their computer (the "user error" stuff that my DH hated when he worked help desk) is worth less than doing consulting and setting up their entire network, kwim?
It also depends on if he's helping individuals or businesses. Individuals are going to not want to pay more than what they'd pay at Best Buy or someplace like that, but a business certainly could pay a lot more. Especially if his help is enough to keep them from having to have an IT guy on their regular payroll.
FWIW, I'm not in IT, I'm a librarian who does a lot of data management type stuff and does freelance work... and my rate is higher than that.
Yeah, I believe he set this rate for himself quite a few years back and has just never changed it.
An example - Today he's going to be helping someone with two things. They have a big-screen TV they've been using as a monitor, hooked it up to a different computer and it won't work, getting an error message that says, "Not Supported." So, he's going to fix that.
Second, the person has three computers and he wants them networked to print off of one printer.
Both easy things and DH thinks it'll take an hour, total. He's already settled on a price for this but just for the future - Wondering what his rate really ought to be.
Hourly rate- but my DH does a lot of corporate consulting- mostly networking and disaster recovery. 125.00/hr- he does a lot of work for medium size companies- (large enough to have the problems that would require his services but small enough that wouldn't necesitate having a very big IT staff- especially with expertise in DH's area)-- usually when they call DH they are already up a river without a paddle- so he goes in and does a lot of 'clean up' work-
the hourly rate REALLY only depends on what kind of services in IT you are providing.
Haha...I say the same thing about my husband. But he feels that God gave him his technological gift so he should share it with others.
For the job you are describing with the big screen and the 3 computers to printer, my husband said he would charge $200 base fee and if it went over 3 hours, he would charge more.
It took him an hour, exactly, so he charged $50 to make things even.
It's an old boss of mine, with whom I still maintain a friendship but I still think DH should be charging more. I should call around to some shops in town and see what they charge.
Thanks guys!
In that case DH would still have a base rate of $200. Possibly a discount if it were an aquaintance but $50 is a pretty low charge.
DH has his own IT consulting business. His hourly rate ranges from $75/hr (for something simple like software installation or basic website design) to $200/hr (for bigger projects like network set-ups or infrastructure solutions).
