What does your child's therapist do to stop toe-walking?

DD does this when she is in sensory overload mode.

I remind her not to do it, and she will stop momentarily, but then starts back up again.

She is 29 months.

Re: What does your child's therapist do to stop toe-walking?

  • I think there was a post on this over the weekend? For my DS (20 mo) our OT bounces him on an exercise ball; she 'corners' the ball so it does not move and bounces DS 'hard'. So he gets his sensory fix I guess.

With me, I make him wear shoes that do not bend very well.

I also heard massage of the bottom of the foot was helpful.

  • What about when this happens on a play date and bouncing on a ball isn't an option?

Something discreet that can be done?

  • If you're embarrased by her toe-walking and don't want to make a big deal about it you could just play it off as her feet hurting and give her a quick massage. Our staff PT massages all the way from the center of the foot to up behind the knee, paying special attention to the acchiles tendon. There are two muscles that lay side-by-side in the calf and if you spend some time rubbing, youc an feel the crease that is between them. That's where she rubs alot.

If DD toe-walks because she's overloaded this might help her calm down and get some input through her feet. Maybe use some relaxing aromatherapy massage oil?

  • I asked my OT about this today and she still suggests jumping. Of course, it this is at a play date (so  no ball), maybe you all could jump on a bed, cushy floor or other surface? Even grass would work.
  • I am an OT and one thing I always recommend are high top shoes that cover the ankle to block the ankle and make it harder for the child to toe walk. Wear them during awake times.
