3rd Trimester

2cm....

How long did/ is it taking for everyone to get from 2cm to active labor. I have heard 3-5 weeks, i'm just curious.. hearing i'm dilated at all is exciting... things are in progress!!!Big Smile

Re: 2cm....

  • Unfortunately dilation isn't a sign of labor.  Some women walk around dilated for weeks & weeks.  Others have no dilation & end up in labor that night.

Yep!  This is why I'm not even bothering to get checked until 40 weeks because it just gives false hope!

Baby #3 is on the way!

  • The way I understand it, dilation and effacement don't tell you when you'll go into labor, just how far your body needs to go when you do actually go into labor.  As PP said, many women walk around for weeks at 2 cm dilated.  Good luck.

  • It really just depends on your body. Everyone is different and you will go into active labor when your body and your baby is ready.

I was dialated to 3 cm and in active labor. So I guess it just depends on the person. For my 38 week check up I was dialated at all. Then at 39 weeks 5 days I was having contractions. When I went to the hospital I was dialated to 3 and in labor.
  • It could take an our or it could take 6 weeks.  No one knows.

I'm 4cm and 70% right now, and I'm sure I'll make it to my May 24th induction in 3 weeks.

With that being said, I am glad that I know how far I've progressed already... I won't labor at home very long, especially since this is baby #2.

  • You can be closed tight and go into labor that night. Dilation is no predictor of labor.

That said, with my first I walked around for just under 2 weeks 2cm dilated before my water broke. I was still 2cm when I got to the hospital.

  • my sister was at 1cm on monday and had her baby today!! and it was her first child!!!!! unfort. nothing counts... to me its very annoying, i mean come there should be a sign that could be counted for!!! but nothing.. not even BH, or losing your mucus plug, or even being dialated!! i feel your pain.. but stay positive.. atleast you started dialating!! i was reading another bumpies story earlier.. she was 40 weeks exactly and wasnt dialated at all... thats rough!! well good luck!!
  • As of last Saturday, I was 50% effaced and fingertip dilated - and there's a LO still baking. This is the reason my OB doesn't do internals until 40 weeks - you could be closed at the appointment and go into labor that night or walk around centimeters dilated for weeks.
  • I didn't dialate at all until several hours after we got to the hospital- when the nurses finally agreed with me that I was in labor!  However, I did lose my plug (for the first time w/ DD) abt 2-3 wks before I delivered if that helps...

  • I have been at 2 cm since my first internal...so for at least 2.5 weeks.  With DD I was at 1 cm at my 39 week appointment and went into labor five days later, FWIW.
