Stink bugs

Are so disgusting and I'm so sick of them.  We live in Chevy Chase, MD and have these awful creatures in our house.  My worst stink bug encounter happened a couple weeks ago when I was changing DS on his changing table and a horrible, disgusting, terrifying stink bug crawled up onto his changing pad.  Of course, I scooped DS up and brought him to safety with his diaper half hanging off.  (I have an irrational fear of these bugs).

We have a pest control company come by quarterly, but apparently that doesn't help with the stink bugs.  I know they're pretty rampant in our area.  Have any of you had success with getting rid of stink bugs?

Re: Stink bugs

  • If you have a pest control company you should be able to call them up and ask them to come out for a free visit because you are having a stink bug problem.  I know we have Orkin and they will do it for free as well as Terminix when I called and priced them.

  • We get them too, and it's gross. They are usually on our first floor (not always), and I've luckily never encountered one in the baby's room. I did find one in my room, though.  DH usually ends up getting them to crawl on a piece of toilet paper and flushing them down the toilet.

Our exterminator said they don't do flying insects at all, so if you find someone who does, let us know!

PS Is it true that if you squish it, it stinks? I know that's why they are called stink bugs, but I've never actually tested it.

Yes, completely true.  This fall when I was trying to get my 2 month old to sleep by walking all over the house, we finally settled one night on the couch in our family room.  It was about 2 am, so it was dark, and I was rubbing her back, and felt something odd, and then everything smelled.  I realized that I had squished a stink bug that had been walking on her back.  It was gross.  I do not recommend it.

Stink bugs have no natural predators (or this is what we've been told by our Orkin guy), and while they are working on something to get rid of them chemically, it's not a high priority b/c they aren't dangerous.  They've pretty darn stupid and slow, actually.  But they are certainly ugly and scary looking!

We usually catch them in a tissue and flush them or put them in the trash - lol maybe we should put them in the diaper genie!  The smell there would certainly kill them!
