Any extended formula feeders?

Okay so all of the posts about people weaning from formula early got me thinking.

I know I have a different kind of situation because Trig was a preemie and he is SO SMALL (and he hardly eats) but we are still on fortified highly caloric formula per docs orders. I just wondered if I am alone in this. And maybe it's flameable but he's still on the bottles, too, because every time I try to switch him to sippy cups he gets some kind of illness and it's just not the right time to switch. Seriously, since he turned a year old we have had so much trouble - he had that horrible ear infection/hospitalization and it took a long time to get over that. Then he got a really bad cold. NOW he's just getting back to normal from a really bad stomach bug (that he passed around to everyone in the house). So maybe now is a good time to try and switch.

Okay so sorry about being long winded, but who else still gives formula?

Re: Any extended formula feeders?

  • DS is15mo and we still offer formula occasionally (a few times a week, not daily). Most of the time DS drinks whole milk or juice. Our pedi told us (without us asking) that we could continue formula until he's 2. DS doesn't have any weight concerns (he's now in the 75-95 percentile, was 6lbs at birth)

I guess I kind of think of it like a multi-vitamin. As long as he's eating a variety of foods, I don't really think DS needs supplemental vitamins, but occasionally I start to worry that he hasn't eaten enough variety to get all the right nutrients, so then we give him 6-8oz formula.

And for the "busy working mom" excuse...some nights we run out of milk and neither of us feels like running to the grocery store... so I really like having the formula around for him to have at breakfast instead of giving him juice.

Married June '03. DS born Jan '09. DD born Feb '12. No, we didn't choose to be childless for the first 6 years, only the first 3.

  • 1. RE bottles. It will happen when it happens! We had Nolan TOTALLY off the bottle by 17 months. It took a while, and he was doing them just at night for the last month or so. Do what works at your house!

    2. RE Extended formula. Nolan did not get formula past 11-12 months. Lincoln may. He has some feeding issues/food intolerances that are proving to be a bit intense. Our GI has said that the possibility exists for him to be on his formula, or the toddler equivalent for a while.

  • We didn't super extend formula (maybe by another month or so while supplementing with milk?) but fwiw DD is still using bottles before nap or bedtime. . . I know I'm going to hear it from the pedi for her 18 mth appt.  ; )
  • Our nephew will be on formula at least until 18 months.  He's a poor eater, and doesn't eat a wide variety of foods - his menu is pretty limited, and until he can demonstrate he'll eat a variety of foods, 3 solid meals a day, they want him to remain on formula.

We used formula for quite a while. DS and DD couldn't tolerate milk at all. We tried soy and the lactose free milk at 12 mo. They couldn't handle any of it. I continued with formula in their sippy cups.

We transitioned to the cups first with their formula and then SLOWLY added milk (lactose free) to their formula. When I say slow, I mean slow. We only put one oz per day in their cups for the first week. Then 2oz per day and so on. Once i had them up to 4 oz per day, I started doing 1oz in each of their 4 sippys of milk per day. We increased until we had all milk.

In your situation, I don't think there is anything wrong with using formula longer.

  • don't worry about it...you are not alone.

we are 100% sippy cups for awhile, but did give DS a bottle of formula when he didn't wnat to take the sippy cup (we he had a stomach bug or his tubes).  We also give formula maybe one bottle a month.  It is ok.

we love to give milk more but sometimes he drank the formula more than the milk.  So he got one bottle of formula the whole month of april.

do what you need to do.....I am a mom who still sometimes feeds purees and I think there is no magical date to get rid of bottles, start milk, stop purees, etc.  do what you need to do to ensure he is gaining.

we have also ran out of milk = we drink milk a lot ourselves....so that is why he also got some formula too.  I also look at it like a multi vitamin (so I agree w/2 points here).  Not everyone will agree and some with flame, but my pedi said we could also use to 2years.  dr sears i think recommends that...at least they get some vitamins/iron from it.

DS is at the 85% but I still worried about him getting enough on some days when he refused to eat due to teething and ear infections.

  • Ava hated milk at first, so it took awhile to slowly wean her off the formula (we'd mix them together and slowly decrease the amount of formula and increase the amount of milk).  And, she still has a bottle before bed every day!  To be honest, I LOVE the snuggle time, and I didn't think it was a good time to stop them right before the babies are born.  When I mentioned stopping them at her 15-month appointment, her pedi didn't seem to think we needed to rush, as long as we were sending her to bed with a bottle (bad for the teeth).

  • Yep, that's us.  But it isn't my choice.  DS has a severe gag reflex with oral defensiveness and feeding aversions.  We've been working with a feeding  therapist and GI doc but he is still not on solid food.  I realize that we are a special case with all this going on.
