PT question - do you let LO use the little potty as a toy?

We bought a little potty for E last night and put it in our bathroom. She loves sitting on it in the bathroom but she also loves carrying it around the house and having her dolls sit on it. Were you strict about keeping the little potty in the bathroom or did you let your LO also use it as a toy? I told her this morning she had to keep the potty in the bathroom but that she could bring a dolly into the bathroom to sit on the potty. Just wondering what is the right thing to do.

I'm with Julie - potty is not a toy.

  • I think you made a good move with 'the dolls can sit there, but they have to go to the bathroom to do it because the potty doesn't leave the bathroom"  I actually think it sounds good that she's taking her dolls to the potty...modeling what her behavior will hopefully be.
  • I think definitely needs to stay in the bathroom.  Although in our house, dolls and animals get to use it to 'potty' as much as they want to.  And good grief, Curious George has to 'make pee pee' all the freaking time! :)

  • Ditto Julie & everyone else- fine for the dolls to go in but has to stay inthe bathroom, that was a good call on your part.

And Double Ditto Julie on the no littel potty thing- I won't be doing that either this time.  Too totally yuck to clean and a PITA when we travel (we do a lot of overnights at my parents' house).  This kiddo is going on the big potty with a step stool and a seat!

At Alex's school they told me using the little potty was a mistake- just adding another step in transitioning to the big toilet.  He goes exclusively on the big toilet now, but I agree, doing it again I'll skip the little potty step.

  • I don't really see the big deal of letting her play with it - almost every potty book we have (except for one) talks about pretending with dolls and such.  I think it's part of the learning process - as long as there's a conversation that accompanies the play.

I am actually glad we had the potty chair we had - it has a removable seat that can either sit on the chair or on the actual toilet.   I'm happy that when Ryan actually decided to go potty that he chose to do it on the toilet - a lot less mess to clean up but honestly, I still had to clean the potty seat anyway.

  • We let our guy play with his. It's in the living room, but he'll bring it to the bathroom sometimes.

I wanted him to be comfy with it before we started to try him on it.
