Runners/Joggers please come in!

Hey I have never been good at doing daily jogging/running.....I will walk 2-3x per week, but after my LO gets here I want to start a walk, jog, run, regimen to assist me with dropping the baby weight and getting toned...since I am due in Aug and live in NJ I will only have 3 months of good weather left to go outside (I can use the treadmill after that) Help please....give me some tips to get my stamina up, and stay motivated, as well as prevent injury and see results...thanks ladies I appreciate your help Stick out tongue

Re: Runners/Joggers please come in!

  • When I am training for a race, I do the 10/1  10 minutes running 1 minute walking, just to build up my endurance...the reverse of this is great for a beginner runner!!  Walk 10 minutes, run 1...eventually work your way up to 2 minutes, 3 minutes....running is great exercise but you have to stick with it, and remember, take it slow...:o)

Hope this helps, I am a firm believer in, IF I CAN RUN, I PROMISE ANY ONE CAN!!!

  • That is a great idea, thanks!
  • I was a college athlete so getting back into shape PP has been very easy for me. But I didn't start running right away and I also didn't work out at all while pregnant. I would recommend doing walking for a week with light to moderate jogging. And after I would also stretch for a long period of time. You won't feel sore right away if you do good stretching. Also, if you put the tread mill on an incline, it helps your butt and quads. Good luck!!
  • I've also seen the recommendation to do shorter intervals too - like run 60 seconds, walk 60 seconds, etc. Do what feels good to you, but aim to increase the time you spend running while decreasing the time you spend walking. Good luck!
  • Yah, I'm a wanna-be runner, but I'm horrifically slow and usually not that motivated.  I've found though, that running for 30 minutes 3x a week is sort of a nice break, so I look forward to it more.

I would recommend either the couch to 5K plan or one by Jeff Galloway (google either and they come up as one of the first links) for a good, easy way to get back into it without injuries.

I've actually been doing couch to 5K, but I've been taking two weeks to do each week on the plan, and it's been working well for me.  I just walked for a couple weeks once I felt better after the birth as well, so that was a good foundation.  I would say I didn't actually start jogging until about 3 to 4 months post-partum.  Go easy on yourself!
  • Like PP suggested, many people have had success with both the Jeff Galloway method and the C25K program. Just be careful not to push too hard, or start the routines before your body is ready.
