Moms of 2-- where are your carseats placed?

Baby will be here on Wednesday (if it doesn't come on its own sooner) and I still haven't installed the infant carseat base.  Where would you put it?

We have an Acura MDX.  I would like to keep the carseats on the second row (although 3rd row seating placement is an option from time to time).

Currently. DS is in a Britax Marathon (soon to be Frontier) behind the driver seat.  I am wondering if baby should

1) go in the center, or if that might be too close to DS (he loves to bring toys and sticks to hold in the car).

2) go behind the passenger seat.

3) go behind the driver and DS moved to passenger side.

I would love insight from Mom's who had to make the decision before me!  TIA

Re: Moms of 2-- where are your carseats placed?

  • Well first - Congrats!

Honda Accord here. We have DS (4 yo) in a Frontier behind the driver, and DD (20 mo) rear facing behind the passenger.

For me, I know that the middle is safer, but I wanted to keep DS away from the baby. I like having DS behind me so I can see him in the rear view, if needed, and I have one of those mirrors so that I can see DD RF.

  • I have my older DD behind the passenger seat so I can hand stuff back to her if I need to and the baby is behind the driver seat.
  • DD (4 yrs) is behind the passenger, DS (1 yr) is behind the driver.
  • We have a 4 door sedan. We have one on each side. It doesnt really matter (statically) which kid is on which side. The middle seat is marginally safer, but only if the seat fits and doesnt interfere with seat next to it. The seats probably wont fit side by side, though, so really you're just left with one on each side.

Right now we have our RF 2 year old behind the driver and our FF 4.5 year old behind the passenger, but this pretty much only because when we drop DD off at school, she doesnt have to step in the street if she's on the passenger side. We used to have them reversed because the RF seat takes up more room for the person in the front seat. But honestly, our back seat is so big that it didnt really matter like we thought it would ;)

This. And now the baby is 20 months and we haven't changed a thing because it's a habit now.

  • 3yo DD is behind the driver and DS in the infant carrier is in the middle. If they were each on the outside we would never be able to get to the 3rd seat.

  • I didn't want DS and #2 next to each other for the same reasons you mentioned- he eats in the car, brings small toys, etc- just didn't want to deal with it (not to mention my car isn't big enough to do it anyway).

I've got DS behind passenger because I figured I can't see #2 anyway since he or she will be RF (I don't use the mirror).  I also like to pass him books/toys/food, etc *all the time*.

  • I have DS #1 behind the passenger seat, and DS #2 behind the driver now (at 3 and 19 months)...but when DS #2 was an infant, it was reversed, in case I needed to put a paci in the baby's mouth or otherwise console him.  I couldn't get a hand on him at all when he was rear-facing if he had been directly behind me.  But now I have them switched because DS #1 has to be on the passenger side for preschool carline dropoff (they don't want teachers or children to have to pass between cars).

I have a small SUV, and while I *could* have fit them next to each other with one in the middle spot (I have a friend with the same car who did put the infant in the middle with the toddler on the passenger side), I decided not to...because as others have pointed out, DS #1 was just too unpredictable.  He routinely threw things (sippy's, shoes, book, toys) and he could have hurt the baby.  Yep, we had a really rough period with DS #1 around that age, he was NOT nice to baby brother.  Not to mention the snacks!

Last thing I wanted to point out, is that if you DO want to put someone in the middle, I've read in several places it's actually better to put the toddler in the middle - because they are less protected in their convertible than the infant is in their infant seat.

  • option 3.

I hand stuff to my oldest all the time (book, cup, toy) so I thought it was just easier since he was the one forward facing to put him in arms reach. My youngest is behind the driver.

In DH's truck we put them next to each other and it didn't work. He would drop toys & such in her seat. He would also get upset because she would grab his seat & try to grab his cup. In the end we seperated them :)

  • Congrats!  We have our older daughter front facing in a radian behind the driver and the baby rear facing in a radian behind the passenger.  We drive a beetle and DH is 6' tall, so a RF seat behind the driver would mean he could never drive our shared car.  Center seat also isn't an option since there is none in the beetle (it's a 4 seater, not 5).  We're considering a slightly larger car and will likely put DD1 in the center and DD2 behind the passenger so if we ever have another person with us they can get in.  Or we'll keep it the way it is and move one child or the other the rare times we drive someone.

  • I have a Murano and the kids are on two sides. 5 y.o. is in Nautilus behind the driver and my 2 y.o. is on the passenger side.
  • We have an Acura MDX for one of our cars too. DD will be in her Marathon behind the drivers seat. Baby will go in the middle. The infant seats just don't fit well anywhere else. Plus this way the 2nd row seat can be moved to get to the 3rd row if necessary.

In our smaller car - Acura TSX, I think DD will move behind the drivers seat (in a Graco Nautilus), and baby will be behind the passenger seat. I just don't think it will fit in the middle.
