foods/things to avoid

I thought it might be interesting to see what some of us have been told to avoid, and to see how much it varies.

I live in teh UK, for what it's worth, so I'm also wondering if some of these are cultural/geographic.

Avoid:

soft, blue and unpasteurized cheeses

shellfish and sushi

peanuts if you have a history of any allergies/excema/etc#

cold meats unless youv'e just opened a container, and any leftovers unless they've been thoroughly re-cooked.

contact with soil/kitty litter (both for the same reason) - so no gardening

ANY meds apart from tylenol or tums

alcohol (although an occasional unit after the second tri is apparently ok - I go teetotal though)

over 300mg of caffeine - so any more than a cup of coffee, or a few cups of tea, or some strong dark chocolate

Recommendations:

Tuna or other oily fish twice a week

I think that's it!

  • Sushi

    Deli meats

    Hot dogs

    Caffeine

    Alcohol

    Anything unpastuarized

    Shellfish

    Fish with high mercury content

Canned tuna only once a week max

Cat litter (but I don't have a cat)

That's all I can think of from last time, I haven't had my first visit this time.

  • About the shellfish all of my books (mayo clinic, you having a baby) and the info from my MD say that shellfish is fine to eat and great way to get iron especially if you have an aversion to red meat. Just thought I would throw this out there.
  • Well, I take everything with a grain of salt as well - the shellfish is only an issue (according to the NHS) b/c of the potential for food poisoning. So if you trust it's source and who cooked it, you're fine. Or at least it's an educated risk.

  • EVERYTHING is a risk for food poisoning if it isn't cooked properly.  I've heard shellfish is fine.

  • great...i ate blue cheese yesterday without even thinking twice about it. i try to avoid things but then like i had gum and thought oh snap! there's artificial sweeteners in here.  i feel pretty guilty about that but i figure there are people who dont know they are pg until relaly late and they really dont change any  thing or all of those pg teens out there with no prenatal care who eat what ever...not to mention the crack and heroine addicts who carry their babes to full term....ok maybe im being a little dramatic but that is how i stop worry so much if i forget and have  a piece of gum...i dont drink coffee or soda any way so that is easy. i miss sushi though!

  • I read something yesterday that said to avoid eating

    Pineapple

    Papaya

    and Bitter melon/Bitter gourd

"because they can bring on complications"

    Anyone else heard this?

  • I've never hear that, no. I know they recommend (tons of) fresh pineapple to try and stimulate labour, so maybe it's something connected to that?

That's interesting.  However, my OB recommended I try to eat more fruit (I've been too sick to eat anything but crackers) and mentioned eating papaya specifically. I hate papaya though b/c it's far too sweet.

  • I'd be careful about eating Tuna more than a few times a month b/c it's high in mercury.  I think salmon is fine.

Here's a link to seafood that's high in mercury: https://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/fishmercury.htm

That's what I was thinking to. I plan on asking at my appointment on the 7th. Because pineapple is one of my favorite fruits and I'd hate to give it up if I didn't have to.

  • Tinned tuna has less mercury than fresh tuna, so my canned tuna/mayo/baked potato is fine.

Let us know re: the pineapple/papaya?
