3rd Trimester

Do you get an ultrasound in third trimester?

I just had my 34 week dr appt and they didnt say a word about any more ultrasounds, anyone know if it is standard to get another one before baby arrives?

  • I won't unless there is something wrong.

  • I only would have if there was a reason for concern.

  • I am at my 30 week appt. only because at my 20 week she was breech & the doctor wants to see where she is at that point.

I had one at 32 weeks because they wanted to make sure she was no longer breech. I don't think I will get another one before she is born.

With my son though, the doctor did one at 36 weeks.

I've never understood how a doctor can say a baby is breech at a 20 week u/s. My LO was tumbling and moving around like crazy!

  • I am will be getting one around 37 weeks.  This is due to not being able to get them done at the doctor's office.  I ahve to go the a hospital due to my insurance.  I have not had one since March so I don't mind.  They want to make sure LO is growing and not breech as well.
  • i will have a few more probably, but only bc i have GD.  i'd honestly rather only ever have one US at 20 weeks than deal with all that GD comes with...ugh!

but my understanding is that generally you only get one in the third tri if there is a problem

  • I've had two growth ultrasounds. One at 31w when I was measuring 3 weeks ahead and one at 35w when I was measuring 5 weeks ahead.

Most people don't have another u/s unless there is a problem.

  • I'll get one next Friday if baby isnt here still...I'd much rather him here than have to go in for another U/S. I am scheduled for an NST if he's not here by Tues.

  • I have to a growth ultrasound at every visit from here on out- my asthma has been horrid and they want to watch her growth.  Apparently it can be affected.

But none of my friends had them unless there was a reason (one had a son with an enlarged kidney and another had preeclampsia and baby quit growing).

  • Only if you have issues....I had 3 this week and 1 the week before....oh and I have 1 on Monday in case going to the hospital every day this past week wasnt enough.
  • I'm getting one, but I think it is because I am at a little higher risk since I am 'older'.  I don't think that there is anything inherently wrong, so I think that is why.

  • My doctor routinely sends his patients for growth u/s at 36 weeks, just to give him a rough estimate of how big the baby is.  It's just an estimate - it can be up to +/- 2 lbs. off.  But I don't think my doctor is the norm.

  • We got one yesterday at our 36 week appt - for growth, fluid check, etc. It's standard in the practice.

  • It isn't standard.  I got one b/c I was measuring 3 wks ahead two appts in a row.

    DD1 born 5/24/10.

    Missed M/C at 14 wks Feb 2012.

    DD2 born 5/14/13.

    Missed M/C at 9 wks July 2015.

    Expecting someone new 4/17/17.
  • My OB does just 2 u/s unless there is a problem. At 18wks for anatomy and at 36 weeks for positioning, anatomy again and weight guestamate.
  • I had one this week, and I'll have a another "big" one at 37 weeks. My OB just likes to check position, fluid levels, and size of baby.  This way, if  LO is breech, we still have time to try and get it to turn.

It standard practice for my OB and her partners, but I don't think it's the norm across the board.

  • i am because my dr isnt sure on my due date, i have already thinned completely so he wants to check the size and just make sure everything still looks good! he is obsessed with U/S and my insurance pays for them so fine by me! im excited to see our LO on monday!
