IUD's and your Insurance

Did anyone's insurance company cover your IUD?  I want to get one when it's time and I was just wondering if any insurance company's cover these?

I wanted to get one but my insurance covers NO birth control.  Apparently they'd rather pay for prenatal care and labor and delivery!

Yeah, seems crazy to me.  Sort of backwards.

  • My insurance covered 80%.  It was $600, I paid $120.

  • Mine covered it (Mirena).  I only payed my copay ($20).  I have a HMO by Coventry Health Plans of Missouri.  Thank you insurance for saving me over $1000.  BTW - I used to have Aetna and they don't cover any birth control.

It is crazy.  We have BCBS of IL which is kick ass otherwise.

Are you serious??  Insurance companies are so messed up.

  • I have an insurance company called Christian Brothers.  They don't cover anything that goes against the wishes of the Pope/God.  I'm not kidding.  I actually have a letter stating that.  So no BC, but all the babies I want.

I have Aetna now, and have coverage for birth control.  From the small print on my plan docs, it appears that your employer has to specifically add it as an option to the plan contracted for (at an increased cost to the co., I'd imagine).

  • Horizon BC in NJ wont cover it.  I called last week.
  • Mine covered the insertion, but not the device itself.

  • Mine covers it totally.   I had one for a year before we were TTC.  I loved it.  Mirena is what I had.  I had bad side effects(laid down on a public bathroom floor to avoid passing out and had to call dh to drive me home) for a few hours after it was put in but, that was really my only issue with it. Also had SUPER heavy periods after it was taken out but,  we were KU after 4 months post IUD and apparently that goes away.

  • I have Tufts and mine is covered 100% except for the $20 copay for the visit.
  • My insurance is through a catholic university. They do not cover BC.

Mine does.  But for Mirena it had to be processed through pharmacy benefits.  I paid my $75 yearly pharm deductible and $50 copay for it as a pre-order.  They'll cover insertion and follow up 100%.
