Need Advice:Weaning from Paci

I've just lost the second paci and paci string that I replaced the last one we lost. I am tired of dealing with them!

Do you think 14 months is too early to start the weaning process? The pedi said they should be weaned by 15 months, or starting at 15 months. I am just ready to be done. I was thinking of only allowing them at nap time and over night in the crib. I feel like lately she's become more and more attached, and I don't want to encourage her. Today in the car she did fall asleep without it (since we lost it). WWYD?

Re: Need Advice:Weaning from Paci

  • The one she had today? I stuffed it in your bag b/c Savannah was trying to get it. The front pockets of it. :)

Anyways, for Savannah's 15 month appt, the Pedi said, "Now is a good time to start weaning from the Paci if she has one". We she only uses it while in the crib - for naps and bedtime. He said "In that case, it's ok to do that - but I would wean from that around 18 months".

I'm SO not looking forward to that b/c it truly helps her sleep ... but maybe we'll just give it a shot at 18 months. I figure that if she is only using it while in her crib, it can't be that bad .... right?

  • Maddie has hers in her crib and in the car, and has been that way since about 13/14 months. I will probably take it out of the car soon and see how she deals with that- although honestly if she freaks I will probably let her keep it in the car until we're ready to give it up.

We are nowhere near ready to give it up for naps/night. It's a major soothing thing for her, and as of now I plan on waiting until she is old enough to "trade it in" for a new stuffed animal or something. I *personally* don't see anything wrong with her having it in the crib until she is 3 or 3.5. If we can get rid of it before then, great.  If not, oh well.

  • We had cut back in the last few months when we'd let Jack have his paci (outside of being in his carseat and crib) but then lately i've let him have it a lil bit more cuz he's pretty miserable these past few weeks cutting 7 teeth at once (molars and canines) and i know this helps him so we've been a lil more leinent (sp?). We try not to have it much outside of the house other then the car but sometimes he's just miserable but i dont let him have it 24/7 anymore and lord knows how many paci's weve lost over the past 18 months!! Im with Jenhum in that I'm okay with him having it till he's around 3ish as long as he's not walking around places with it in his mouth and only at nap and bed time cuz its very much a comforting thing for him!!

  • I'm going to try it, but I have to get DH on board, he is bad about giving into her.

Mere-nope the paci is gone (I clipped it to her in the car), we made a few stops this afternoon that involved me carrying her and I think it got pulled off her shirt and fell.

  • My sister said she decorated a little box and makes her DS put the paci into the "treasure box" when he leaves his room. She also lets him have it on long car rides, but not short ones around town. She said he's doing really well with it.

    Ditto...

Holly also only has hers in the car, and in her crib. They don't allow them (well, they discourage them) in the toddler class at daycare, so she doesn't nap with one there. I just am in no rush to get rid of it completely, and don't plan to worry about it at all until she's at least 2, or when she can understand why I'm taking it from her.
