2nd Trimester

anyone ever had kidney stones while pregnant?

i spent the afternoon in the hospital. they said it *may* be kidney stones (dont know for sure because they cant do a CT scan to diagnose) they sent me home with Lortabs and a "hope you feel better" and if i get a fever or the pain continues/worsens (i dont think it can get worse honestly its terrible)  to go back to the ER.

im a little nervous they had me on morphine for the pain and now im on Lortabs. i need them to not have such intense pain but i feel horrible taking them with my LO in there.

does anyone have any experience with this at all? does it go away? =(

Re: anyone ever had kidney stones while pregnant?

  • The same thing happened to me on Sunday. They admitted me and I spent the night but the doctors couldn't figure out excatly what was wrong. It could be a kidney stones they said, or it could be something else! So frustrating! They sent me home with Vicodin. It has gotten a little better over the week, but it still gets bad at times.

  • I have never had them while pregnant... but I do get kidney stones and they are NOT FUN! ?So, I definitely feel your pain right now.

    ?

The first one I had, I was on pain medication and then something to loosen the path way of the stone so I could pass it easier. ?I passed it the next morning.

The second one, I had issues for about 4 or 5 days, never passed the darn thing but I felt better. ? It came back to bite me in the butt 2 months later. ?It ended up blocking my ureter (sp?) and I had to have surgery to remove it and a stint was put in place for three days. ?Since it was blocking things, I ended up with a nice kidney infection. ?Ugh. ? I was pretty miserable. ??

Please know, you can definitely pass stones and having to have surgery to remove them doesn't happen all the time. ?If you've never had one before, chances are you'll pass it just fine.?

Right now, I know I have two kidney stones in my left kidney, but they are happily hanging out. ?It's like I'm a ticking time bomb and I hate it. ??

Sorry for the book. ?I'll be thinking about you! ?Good luck! ?

  • My friend had them. They put her on tylenol 3 and told her to drink lots of water/fluids until they passed. Her baby turned out just fine.  If they knew you were pregnant they aren't going to give you anything that will knowingly hurt it.  the pain will go away once they stones pass.  I had stones (when not pregnant), I'm sorry you have to go through that. They are so painful!
  • Also, the reason I know I have two kidney stones in my left kidney is because my urologist did an ultrasound. ?I'm surprised they couldn't have done that for you. ?I have always had cat scans in the ER to find them, but I wasn't pregnant at the time.... there shouldn't be a reason they couldn't use an ultrasound machine to know for sure.?

I don't know about the OP, but with me they did an ultrasound and didn't see anything, but I fit all the symptoms. I was told by several people that ultrasound isn't the most reliable way to see stones.

they did one but couldnt ge ta clear view on what is blocking. all they said is "ummm ...you have blockage but we cant tell you for sure its kidney stones..." and that was...that. sent me home with a paper that tells me what to look for with kidney stones so im trying to relax and hopefully get some sleep!

  • I have a long frequent history of stones, one major surgery and 3 lithotripsy procedures, above passing a few, and I always have a couple hanging out in my kidney.

Last pregnancy I went to the ER (only once thank goodness) and they sent me home with pain meds too. I don't think it's a huge deal as long as you are not taking them regularly for an extended period of time. I had to take them that whole weekend and then on occasion through the rest of my pregnancy. Baby was fine. It's long term use that make it dangerous, and risk withdrawal etc... it's not like you will be taking them daily for weeks.

I totally understand the pain, it's often unbearable, and unfortunately stones are common in pregnancy. Try your best to drink as much liquid as you can to flush it through, the pain comes mostly from it being stuck. And definitely call your Doc if anything changes. It's rare but they can block urine flow so much that your kidney can swell - mine did and that hurts worse.

I really hope you feel better and that it passes quickly.

  • Just wanted to pop in to say I hope you are feeling better soon.
