Babies: 3 - 6 Months

seriously about to give up.

DS is 4 months old and has reflux and he is on Prevacid, but we still cant get it under control. He has so many problems burping and i am going insane. Its like he saves up tiny gas bubbles just so that he can scream 30 minutes into his nap or night time sleep. I have to hold him for all naps so I can burp him before he starts screaming. If I dont hold him for his naps and he wakes up in his crib when he needs to burp he wont go back to sleep, and then he is fussy/all out crying the rest of the day. We have been to so many doctors and they cant seem to help him. Instead of playtime I just spend most of the time trying to work out those tiny burps, but it doesnt seem to help. I am loosing faith in myself as a parent, and I am at the end of my rope.

  • oh mama I'm so sorry, what about a different drug.

My daughter has Reflux (but NOTHING like yours) we have had really really great help from baby probiotics 1x a day for her. She rarely spits up now and she has been on them for about 6 weeks. Within a week it was so much better.

Do you have a moby wrap or something that he  could nap in while you carry him instead of holding him?

I'm sure you are doing this but is his crib inclined?

I pray the Dr.'s can help you , you are doing a great job mama!

  • I'm so sorry. It's sounds to me like you are doing one heck of a job as a mommy though. It takes alot of parience to be the mommy of a baby with colic or reflux. So first of all remember you are doing a great job. How does you LO do when on his tummy? My LO seems to burp alot when on his tummy. Hr has reflux but just spits up all day. My nephew though, has silent reflux. He doesn't spit up but throws up in his mouth and swallows it. He used to cry constantly. My sister would wear him all day so she could get things done. My heart would break for her because he never stopped crying. He is getting better now (he's 4 mos) but the only thing that helped was to wear him in his Moby wrap on her chest. ((hugs)) hang in there. This stage won't last forever.
  • I am so sorry!  I hope you find something to help him soon!  You sound like a great mama!
  • Oh you would not believe how much we have tried. He was on zantac but that gave him a severe diaper rash because he has super sensitive skin.We have colic calm gripe water, which is supposed to be liquid gold in a bottle, but it doesnt help. I have a moby wrap that he can fall asleep in, but he wont burp in it. I know that it will get better, but I feel like I should know how to help him and it kills me to see him hurting. I am about to punch our pediatrician in the face. The last time we were there he told us that Levin should be able to burp on his own. I said well he cant and he had no response.

Have you considered seeing a new Pediatrician?

  • a new ped might be in order.

Also, really think about the probiotics we use FloraBaby for kids.

It can't make it any worse? right!

    GL mama!

No one said motherhood was easy, and you sound like a very strong mom.

Have you tired to ask family members for help? Maybe ask your MIL or mom to babysit once a week so you can take  a little time off for yourself.

Stay strong, I'm sure your DS is just as strong as you and will kick this :)

    GL mama!

MY lil one has aweful reflux.  I use Florababy too! I also put her in the nap nanny to sleep.  If not she throws up all night.  She does not sleep through the Night but she sleeps 5 hours an take hour naps in it. The Nap nanny has made a huge difference.  Also, she is on ceral now and I feed her Happybellies brand with probiotic.  Good luck...feel ur pain.

  • What form of Prevacid is he on?  The liquid or the solutabs?  What is the dosage?

Does he have any milk issues (allergy, etc.)?

You might consider getting a referral to a gastro-intestinal specialist.  You may need to switch from Prevacid to another PPI (Nexium, Zegerid, Prilosec).

I know what you're going through and you're a saint :)  Reflux has by far been the hardest thing in the world.  It took forever to get DS's under control.

  • Thank you everyone for the support. We are moving out of state soon, so we will be switching Pedis. He is on Nutramigen. He takes half of a prevacid solutab twice a day. I have been through 3 different brands of bottles. We finally settled on Dr. Browns after trying Ventair's and Avent's I will look into probiotics, and ask about the other meds. I just hope that we get it under control soon. We just bought a baby hammock that will be delivered within the next few weeks, so maybe he will sleep better in that. We have his bed elevated now, but it doesnt seem to help. You would think that within the 4 months of his life That something would be able to help him. I have been to the doctor practically every week since he was born complaining about this. We have seen all 11 doctors in the Pediatric practice that we go to. They usually just tell me that he will grow out of it soon. When is soon? Thats what I want to know.
  • Try thickening the Nutramigen with cereal.  1tsp per ounce....it really helps.  Also, if you just started the Prevacid recently it DOES cause a lot of gas the first couple weeks while the medicine is working to shut off the acid pumps and get the reflux under control.

I would definitely ask for a referral to a GI though...ours has been so helpful!

  • Don't be down on yourself! You are doing everything that you can. I've been there too.. it's so upsetting to see think that there is nothing you can do to make him feel better. I also put my LO in the Nap Nanny to sleep.  It was the greatest find for us. If sleeping is a problem for you I would give it a try- I have only heard great things about it. It is also great to sit your LO in after eating so he is upright for a little while.  This helped with his reflux greatly too! Good luck! You'll get through this!
