Trying to Get Pregnant

Thal Minor and TTC

Anyone on here have Thalassemia Minor/Major?  Never really thought about my disorder (as I've been pretty much asymptomatic my entire life), but I'm realizing now there is a lot to consider.  DH has already been tested and does not have Thal.  Deciding if we should go see a genetics counselor.

  • Crazy enough, I do! Only minor for me though.  I'm like you, asymptomatic most of the time.  :)  My hubs is not Mediterranean though so we've been told not to worry.  Good luck :)

  • OP- I don't have very good advice (I don't have the particular disorder) but if you are concerned then I would go ahead and see a genetic counselor. Good luck to you whatever decision you make. It seems to me that it would be a difficult decision to make.

    The best to you.

  • I just read up on it a little yesterday and one place I found said that although it is typically a recessive trait (therefore eliminating most threat when only one partner is a carrier) that it can sometimes be a dominate trait.  Then it went on about a bunch of different chromosome jibber-jabber I didn't understand.  I guess best thing to do would be call the OB/GYN; unfortunately, in my experience most doctors know little to nothing about Thal.

You are right about that!  My RE was not concerned.  My general doc back home is Greek and a lot of the Greek community goes to him so I trust his opinion.

    Then why respond?

OP, I don't have it but was just reading up on it and holy cow, that is a lot of information.  Is it thought to be an issue when conceiving or during pregnancy?

As I understand it, no problems specifically about TTC or pregnancy, but the main issue is if man and woman both have thalassemia minor, then child will have thalassemia major and that can be very scary.

From what I can tell the biggest issue is when both partners have the Minor form (carriers of the trait) because they have a 25% chance of conceiving a child with the Major form, which can cause serious birth defects, especially heart problems.

However, I am also concerned about this info I read yesterday about sometimes it can be a "major" problem even if the child has the Minor form.

I've also heard that if we conceive a child with the trait, rather than a "normal" child, I could be in for a much tougher pregnancy.

Got it!  Genetic information is so interesting to me and this is one I've never heard of before.  OP, I know you said your OB didn't know much about it.  Did he/she recommend a genetic counselor or was that just something you were thinking of on your own?

Just thinking about it on my own, and a suggestion from my mom.  The OB had no advice in any direction. No The doctor that saw me from 0-21 (and who diagnosed me) is no longer living, or I would talk with him. No  My next step is calling my RE (I also have PCOS) and seeing what he thinks.

Your RE would probably be a good resource.  He/she may have information for you or could refer you to someone.  I know that I need a maternal fetal medicine specialist and was not sure where to start, but my RE had a couple of names of people who are right in the same building as him.  It makes things so much easier to have people who are in the same vacinity.

  • Thanks for the encouragement and advice ladies.  Seems like calling the RE is the best plan.  It seems so weird to have to worry about something that I regularly forget is even there.
