Recommend your OTC allergy medication (for you, not DC)

I've been struggling with allergies the past couple days and I need to go get something to give me relief.  My main symptom is dry scratchy throat.  Its making it very difficult for me to sleep and I can't take it anymore.  And yes, I'm sure its allergies, cause this same thing happened to me a few weeks back when the pollen counts were high for a few days.  So, with all the OTC allergy meds out there, which should I get or stay away from?

Re: Recommend your OTC allergy medication (for you, not DC)

  • I think I'm super sensitive to meds for allergies.  I tried Claritin and it didn't do anything.  Zyrtec almost put me right to sleep.  Benedryl does the same-puts me to sleep.  Benedryl actually seems to work, but I can't take it during the day.

If someone tried something that worked and didn't knock you out, I'd love to know!

I have tried nasal allergy sprays, but don't find that they help much.  At least, not enough to justify the cost.

  • I take Walmarts generic version of Zyrtec and I take it at night before I go to bed. The next day I'm a new person.

  • I take zyrtec and take it at night because it does make me sleepy.  When my allergies are really bad I take benadryl at night too.

  • Zyrtec is the only OTC med that works for me at the moment.  Claritin used to work, but I must have gotten used to it.
  • I take Claritin.

  • Zyrtec works best for me. Claritin will help a bit if I forget my Zyrtec and have no other options. Benadryl really works best, but it only lasts a few hours vs all day, and it will put me to sleep within 30 minutes.
