WWYD...a car question. to sell or not to sell....

Silly Q.  I have 2 cars.....very long story why.  1 is a convertible.  My hubby says to sell it, (we will be using the SUV for the twins).  My sister says to keep it.  When the twins are older, they can sit in back.  It's 4 yrs. old, paid for, and super low miles.  (only 16k miles).

The place where I purchased it, will buy it back...the price they are giving me is very fair.  I can use it towards a lot of expenses, or save it for a new SUV.  (this SUV i bought used and it's pretty old).  Any advice?

We had a similar situation, but for us it was definitely a no-brainer.  My DH had a 2 seater convertible that he seldom drove even before I was pg (it was stick so I didn't drive it).  We sold it and used the money to renovate our basement.

Sure your kids can sit in the back when they are older, but what's older?  Will you drive it enough between now and then to keep it happy?  (Our car had issues because it wasn't driven enough.)  Unless it was your dream car that you wanted forever and ever, I'd probably just sell it as opposed to hang on to it for something you'll use "someday".  Because you'll still have to pay insurance, taxes, etc on it until then.

I would have a hard time selling it since it is paid for but you will still be paying for insurance and it will need to be driven every now and then to keep it running smoothly.

If we weren't straining on expenses...I would keep it :-P dh and I just discussed that since we are selling my car to get a minivan that we might trade his SUV in for a fun car, that way we can have one fun car and the family car :-)

I think if we can afford it...it good to have a little fun in your life :-) you can use it on date nights too before the kids can ride in it :-)

  • SELL IT...and dont buy an SUV, buy a minivan. DH and I thought we would be fine with 2 SUV's...already had 1 and bought another while is was pregnant. We just didn't have enough room and had to go trade the new SUV for a van, a very expensive lesson to learn. I wish someone had told us to just go ahead and get the stupid van.

These are great points.  Older is quite a bit older...before they can be forward facing.  Also the car just sits.  I only have 16k in 4 years...so not many miles.  I love the car...i thought my hubby woud enjoy it more for date nights...but he's a pick-up kind of guy.  I guess he thinks it's to "foo foo".  Lol.  and it has had to be taken in from lack of driving it.... dead battery, etc.  I need to just let it go.  Confused

LOL.  That's great.  She has 4 kids.  they use their convertible for date nights and running around.   being so small it gets great gas mileage.... but she's (sis)one to talk....she drives a TANK.  (a suburban or something like it).

    Thanks everyone for your posts.

  • i would never drive with my children in the back of a convertible - call me paranoid- but they are not the safest of vehicles (i owned one- loved it- but again- would never put my kids in one).

why would you keep a car sitting around, paying insurance for it - just so you can use it "someday"?   I see no reason to keep it.... unless you simply have tons of extra cash - it seems like an easy answer.

  • I think I will take it in tomorrow- to sell.  The insurance on the winter months is low ($30/month) because it is in storage.  The only reason I have kept it, is that it is paid for...and you never get value back on a car.

The car was fine at one time...but now it is not practical.  I'd love a Tahoe or any kind of SUV. Thanks everyone.
