birth story and pics (sorry-long)

(sorry, I DD'd my first post bc I put Mason's pic as Brooke's too...oops!)

I can't believe the twins are already a week old!  They are still in the NICU but doing very well.  Their digestive systems are still a bit premature so they just need to get the whole feeding thing figured out on a continuous basis and they will be good to go!

Here's my story:

Last Wednesday I went to a routine OB appt after having done a 24 hour urine collection.  The amount of protein in my urine had skyrocketed and my blood pressure was the highest it has ever been even after laying on my side for a while....pre-e was really setting in.  So, my Dr. said "Guess what you're doing today...having your babies!"  I was thrilled and nervous at the same time.  I was 34 weeks 5 days.

DH and I headed to the hospital to prep for my c-section.  Since I had eaten that morning, we had to wait 8 hours until surgery...that took us to 6:30pm.  There was a huge team of doctors, nurses, etc in the room...it was like a party!  I had a spinal tap which I feared getting but it really wasnt that bad. Everything below my chest went numb very quickly.  It was a very odd feeling.  Soon Mason was removed and I heard the sweet sound of his cry :)  Next was Brooke's arrival (There was a moment of panic before she came - what if she wasn't a girl!?)  Sure enough...she was a girl with another healthy set of lungs.  Both babies were brought over for DH to hold near my head.  It was the best moment ever...my babies were here!

Not to scare anyone but the end of the surgery is not something I ever want to re-live.  After the babies are born, the uterus is supposed to contract back down to its normal size...mine wasn't so I started bleeding a lot (I guess this is not uncommon for moms of multiples bc the uterus has stretched beyond belief).  I was given a bunch of drugs including Pitocin to help contract it down.  I felt so much tugging and pulling as the doctors were trying to help push it down.  In the meantime I threw up...lovely.  Finally I was sewn/stapled shut.  My doctor said that they were going to have to watch my uterus and see how well it was going down (from the outside) and if it wasnt cooperating I would have to have a D&C or hysterectomy.  Talk about scaring the sh*t out of me!  Fortunately all turned out ok, but the nurses had to keep pushing on my abdomen/uterus over the next 24 hours to make sure it was returning towards its normal size/position.  This hurt like H*LL!  I had to continue on the Pitocin for 36 hours to help the process.  Not fun.  Since my recovery took so long, I didnt get to see my babies til midnight that night.  I was so out of it though that I barely remember.  Each day got better and better.  I was discharged Sunday and cried most of the day...my hormones got the best of me since we werent bringing the babies home with us.

Now we are going to the hospital each day to see our little munchkins.  It's draining but at least we are getting some rest before they come home and know that they are getting the best care possible.  I'm moving slowly but getting stronger.  I'm pumping but not producing nearly enough milk for twins.  I started taking that herb Fenugreek yesterday so hopefully that will help my supply.

Their stats again were:  Mason Robert 6lbs, 20 in; Brooke Evelyn 4lbs13oz, 17in

Here is my last belly pic taken at the hospital and a close up of my loves :)

  • Congrats and your babies are adorable!

Sorry to hear you had some complications with your delivery.  I was the same - I ended up in recovery for over 5-6 hours and lost a ton of blood (ended up needing blood transfusions).  The pressing on the stomach was so bad :(  But the good news is that although the recovery was hard, within a week or two I felt SO much better.

  • wow, my story is very similar to yours!  I gave birth 8 days ago at 34wks5days..i went into labor naturally but they ended up doing csection.  both our babies are perfect and healthy, but they are also still in the nicu trying to get the whole feeding thing down.  my boy was 5lb 12oz 19inches, and my girl 5lb5oz, 18 inches.  I even have a pic of our little boy in the same onesie as yours has on in the pic....so cute!

Its so hard having them in the nicu...but Im sure we"ll both have our babies home in no time.

    Congratulations, and take care!
