So my LO's are 3 1/2 months and they are doing great with their daytime feedings (every 3 hours) and they are starting to go longer stretches at night (5-6 hours). My DS has reflux and is on prescription meds for it. He spits up pretty frequently, but the pediatrician is not concerned b/c he is gaining weight. I've read that some ped's will recommend rice cereal to thicken the formula which then helps with the spitting up. I think the rice cereal would also help them sleep longer. Is it too early to start? When did you guys start giving your LO's rice cereal in their bottles???
Re: Rice cereal, when to start?
the box I have actually says 4months +.
My doc had us add it to DS's bottle (he also has reflux) starting at 2.5 months. You def. should not do that w/o clearance tho!
I'm a rule breaker when it comes to cereal ; ) Only because I think different babies are ready at different times. Our first started at 3 months (with a spoon), our 2nd didn't want it at 3 months but loved it by 4 months. We plan to see if the girls have an interest soon (they're 4 months).
ETA: I never gave it in bottles because I had heard about the possibility of it aspirating into their lungs. If you're going to start, I'd recommend just going right to the spoon with a consistency just thick enough to scoop onto the spoon and not be too watery.
We also wait till four months, it's what most dr will suggest. This is a great article to read https://kidshealth.org/parent/nutrition_fit/nutrition/feed47m.html
If you are having lots of issues with spitting up you may want to talk to your dr about it. Our suggsted Enfamil AR for two of the triplets due to reflux and spitting up. It really help.
Feeding them cereal will not help them sleep longer, that's an old wives tale.
Reflux issues aside (which changes the "rules" IMO) there is always a "debate" of sorts about when to start solids/cereal. Some people are good with 4 months, others feel 6 months is better. Either way you should ask your pedi and typically use adjusted dates for feeding.
We waited until 6.5 months. Here is an article that may help you with your decision. https://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/readyforsolids.htm
