Home phone line or just cell

Do you have a home phone line or just a cell phone.  I am thinking of getting rid of our home phone but wondering if I should have it in case of 911.

  • You can call 911 from your cell phone and they can still track you too. We just have cell phones.
  • We actually just shut off our home phone last month to save some extra money. So, it's just cell phones now.
  • Both.  I'm home a lot and it makes more sense for us.
  • We've never had a home phone....just an extra expense IMO.
  • We have just cell phones.

  • As soon as someone can come up with a cell phone that sounds just as good in my home as my land line does, then I will get rid of my land line. So we have both. Actually our home phone is part of our internet package so its not too much of an added expense.

  • we've always just run off of our cell phones ... 911 tech has finally caught on that most people no longer have a landline.

  • I only have a cell.
  • I'd like to get rid of our landline, but DH wants it for some reason.  Only telemarketers call us and it's really annoying.

  • We have both and I don't know why.  We rarely use our home phone.  Each month we are WAY under our minutes for our cell plan (the people we talk to most we added to the friends and family thing or they have Verizon) so we could easily get rid of the home phone.  I don't even know why we got the home phone.  Now that we have it I don't see us getting rid of it though (not my choice).  My oldest will probably start wanting to use the phone more soon so it will come to some use eventually I guess.
  • We have only cell phones and have been that way for 5-6 years now.  My DH works for Verizon, so it would basically be sacrilige (sp?) if we did anything else.  He's a site tech and does the 911 call testing frequently, so I'm confident in the technology in an emergency.

Did you know that any cell phone, even without a service plan, can call 911?  That's why a lot of old cell phones are donated to women's shelters/abuse victims.

  • We have both and I like it for long distance calls, etc.  I always use our landline when I'm at home.

Yes, but the cell phones provide an area, while land lines provide an address. (I used to do research with cell phone GPS - it can be very accurate or very vague). Plus, land lines work even when the power is out because power comes through the phone line, while cell phones need to be recharged. Also, land lines are available for anyone (e.g., children) to call 911, while cell phones are more individual unless they happen to be out where people can see them.

We have a land line. We would really like to get rid of it, but we keep it because (a) we use it for calls that we will want to screen, like sales calls, (b) our cells are through work, so we technically could lose them, and (c) I feel weird not having a land line.

  • I am terrible about keeping my cell near me.  So both.

And LOL at this post being marked by the one-star bandit.

  • I went without a home phone for nearly a decade.  We just added one because we put in a security system and it requires a home phone

  • Both.  Cell phone is spotty in my area and we have a central station burglar alarm that needs to run on a land line.
  • we have both but only because we live in the middle of nowhere and dont get cell service. we're thinking about getting that magic jack though. its only like twenty bucks A YEAR and hooks into your online connection
  • We have a home phone with no extras because when we moved our cell phones didn't work in our house at all. Plus, the only Internet available at the time required a phone line. Now, I have an 11 year old so she uses the home phone.
