Washington Babies

is this wrong?

So I'm leaving for a girls getaway weekend today around 1:30 and I've only managed to pump one bottle of BM for Dash. We picked up formula, but it just seems so gross to me.

Would it be wrong to give Dashy bottles of rice milk or almond milk instead of formula for the 48 hours I'm going to be gone? It's only like ten to twelve bottles I think...

input?

Re: is this wrong?

  • Formula is gross to us. But my baby at least seems to love it. And besides being enriched beyond what rice or soy milk would be, I think it has way more calories doesn't it? I'd be worried that Dash wouldn't feel full, and be wanting more in the middle of the night, etc.

Has he taken formula in the past?

  • I think he has had formula in the past ( I was on migraine meds) and he did OK with it, but not great.
  • I would advise strongly against it.  The proteins in rice and almond milk would be too tough for his stomach to digest from what I understand and would have the real potential to upset his system.

Like Anne said, formula isn't appetizing to us, but if you are not able to feed your baby human breast milk, it is your best alternative until their digestive systems are more developed.

From my research, this is what I understand as well.  Plus, my almond milk has a huge label on the side saying "do not feed to infants as formula."

  • I would NOT give rice or almond milk either. Not nearly enough calories or nutrients and 10-12 bottles is really a lot. I mean if it was like for 1 or 2 I might suggest keeping the formula on hand but offer whole cow's milk being as though he's 10 months (did I read that right?) but never a replacement at that age for days on end.

    Good luck with your decision.
  • Thanks girls. We will be doing formula :)
  • Don't do it!  Formula is specially formulated for babies needs!  I just read an article in parents magazine on how milk can be toxic to babies under 1 year and even mixing formula and milk before the age of 1.  Almond milk, rice milk and regular milk contain much more iron than fomula and the iron can be toxic to them!
