Anyone have a child with seasonal allergies?

I thought my 3 year old DD was coming down with a cold....but yesterday she sneezed about 500 times and eventually started getting puffy eyes late afternoon.  Beyond these symtoms, she felt fine.  My husband and I don't have allergies....so does this sound familiar to anyone with allergies?  If so, any recommendations on what would relieve her symptoms.

Re: Anyone have a child with seasonal allergies?

  • My son just started with seasonal allergies this year and it's so sad!  You can tell it makes him so uncomfortable.  My pediatrician said to try either Children's Zyrtec or Children's Claritin.  Depends on the child which will work better.  The upside to Claritin is that it's non-drowsy.  They also told me to use Zaditor for his eyes.  It's a prescription strength antihistamine eyedrop that just went over the counter.  His nose is the worst.  We use saline spray and a nose aspirator to clear it so that we don't have to wipe his nose all day, which hurts him.

We do all these things in the morning when we get up.  He is used to the process now and it's working well, although nothing takes away all symptoms! Good luck.

  • I took my daughter to the Dr yesterday because her eyes are so yucky with drainage coming out of them.  They were crusty everytime she would wake up.  I thought maybe she had some sort of infection.  Turns out, she has allergies.  I have allergies, so I know where she gets it from.  My Dr gave her Children's Zyrtec.  She had her 1st dose yesterday and this morning I already noticed a difference.  I just fell so bad for her.  Allergies suck!

  • Yes.  DS takes childrens Zyrtec.

You could always call your Dr and see what they recommend and the dosage.

  • Sounds like it!

This year has apparently been particularly bad.

Mine don't do well with systemic meds so we're doing Nasonex nasal spray.

    HUGE difference!

    Love it.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • oh gosh yes my poor baby took after me. Actually I have nothing right now and she's a wreck after 40mph winds tore up the pollen counts yesterday! My suggestions are to wipe her face with a washcloth every so often throughout the day to get allergens off her face and to also change her clothes whenever she comes in from being outside. You need to keep the windows in your house closed, sadly. And try not to wear shoes inside to keep from tracking it around the rooms and ultimately into bed by having it on bare feet. We use children's zyrtec. The generic doesn't work the same so be aware. If it stays bad, she may need to see his ped. But that's what we do here! fun fun.
  • DS has very mild seasonal allergies, so we just use local honey right now.  If they get any worse, we will try some of the OTC medications, but since they are so mild right now, I don't want to give him medicine.
  • Eva is also on Zyrtec- it works wonders!

  • Yeah we had to do Zyrtec for the first time last month and it makes DD aggressive so we limit it.
