Steam sterilizer recs?

I'm considering buying the Phillips Avent countertop steam sterilizer. https://www.amazon.com/Philips-Avent-iQ24-Steam-Sterilizer/dp/B001C3MHF0/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I will mostly be using it in my bedroom for my pump parts (and baby bottles later on). I don't like the idea of the microwave sterilizer or the Medela bags because the microwave is on the first floor (bedroom is on third). Right now I'm pouring boiling water over my pump parts and letting them sit for five mins.

The downside of the countertop one is using distilled water and having to descale every 4 weeks.

Any recommendations/suggestions? What did you do for sterilization purposes?

My twins were born @ 29 weeks, now almost 6 weeks actual age and still in the NICU :(

Re: Steam sterilizer recs?

  • I hadn't heard of this one before this post.  I used the avent microwave sterilizer, but I also used it for transporting my pumping supplies and as a portable wash basin/drying rack. For the trouble of distilled water and descaling.....I guess I'd wonder about just buying a small microwave for your bedroom?

  • Good thought, Witt! I'm with her - get a small cheap microwave for $20 for your bedroom instead.

I'm sorry your babies are still in the NICU. :hugs: Hope they're home soon!

  • Sorry, I am not much help because I used the microwave bags and I love them. I am not a fan of extra stuff in the house (especially on the kitchen counter) so that is why I use the bags. I mostly pumped downstairs though so even when I did pump upstairs, I would be bringing the pump down soon anyway and would sterilize then. Oh also I didn't sterilize after every use, just once a day. The rest of the time I washed with soapy water. Sorry your LOs are still in the NICU and I hope they are home in a week or two!!!

  • I used the bags and loved them.  I live in an apartment though and space is a premium and there is only one floor.  I vote for the micro upstairs though.

  • I have this sterilizer and love it. Before that i was boiling everything and got tired of that- need more time to rest when LO does. i use it for pump parts, playtex bottles, born free bottles (i'm trying out all the bottles out there lol i clean the bottles then put them in the sterilizer.

if you're buying it on amazon you can get it cheaper than BRU. On amazon i think you get the model that comes with 2 avent bottles for 89.99. On BRU site it is the same price, shows the 2 bottles but i only received the sterilizer.they aknowledged the mistake and sent me 2 bottles. I reminded them that i could have gotten the same thing cheaper on amazon.

either way i'm happy i bought the sterilizer. it has helped make things easier.
