Waking up to choking

Anyone else waking up and choking horribly? My acid reflux must be in full force because I've been waking up to it a lot lately- 4 times in the past 5 days. Woke up to it at midnight last night and just a bit ago when taking a nap. How awful!

Re: Waking up to choking

  • Yep, I get this same thing due to acid reflux.  I have been taking medication (pepcid-AC) nightly but the reflux is STILL bad and the gagging is even worse.  I thought last night I would have to get up and run to the toilet.  Ugh.

  • Yes and it scares the s*it out of me!  DH too.  I started taking daily reflux meds and I haven't had it happen since.  Do you wake up gasping for air?  I thought it might be relux/sleep apnea, so not fun!

  • Not quite choking but- Just last week (having had a tough week this pushed me over the edge btw and I ended up being a big cry baby about it) I woke up in the middle of the night to tons of reflux coming up- it was essentially like waking up to a mouth full of vomit- tmi, i know.  I feel for you- it totally sucks.

  • 3 times this pg I have woken up gasping for breath.  It is terrible.  My doc said it is acid reflux related.  I have been taking pepcid and so far so good.
  • That happened to me a few times before I dropped when I was around 32-35 weeks.  Scary huh?
  • Yup, for weeks now. It's due to sleep apnea (sp?)  caused by the acid reflux. I asked my doctor about this a bit over a week ago and that's what he said. It sucks and I sometimes will cough for 15-20min straight and feel like I can't breath.
  • Yes, it's awful and very scary.

  • Yes! I've woken up to vomit in my throat and I can't breathe. Sometimes I even have to go throw up. My dr said it is common at this late stage. He has me taking the 150mg Zantac. It's helping. It still happens sometimes but not as often.
  • Just once a couple weeks ago and it freaked me out!  I didn't realize it happens to others too, I thought it was a fluke.

I thought it was a fluke too.  Glad to know I'm not the only one.  This has happened about a handful of times in my pregnancy.  I've never experienced anything like this before becoming pregnant.

  • It's terrible.  I'm 33 weeks now.  I'd been having the exact same thing for the last few weeks.  Sleeping propped up helped, but it was uncomfortable and gave me TERRIBLE lower back pain, so I stopped that.  What seems to have worked for me in the last week is not eating within 3-4 hours before going to bed and eating really bland, plain food (pasta, bread, broth etc.) If needed I take some of those rolaids soft chews.  It sucks because I love spicy food and pizza!
  • I've actually woken up to me heaving/barfing.  It's awful. :(
