Re: NBR: Anyone have a MRI before

  • DS1 had one a few weeks ago.  You have to lay very, very still while they put you into the tube thing so for kids under 4 they put them under general anesthesia.

I think it typically takes about 30-45 minutes?

Not sure what else you are wanting to know about them?

  • you just lay flat and they put you into the tube and they take the images. I've heard of contrast MRI's where you have to drink some stuff to light up your organs, but that's only done in certain situations.

oh and you will have to remove any metal from your body-jewelry, piercings, etc

  • It was loud - kind of uncomfortable, long and boring.

Oh yes, I forgot about that.  They give you ear plugs, right?

  • I have had one.  Basically you go into a tube on a table and you have speakers where they communicate with you to tell you different commands - like to hold your breath for a few seconds.  They take images while you are in there.  The time you are in the machine depends on what they are taking an image of.  It's really not too bad, but it can feel a little claustrophobic.  They do have centers now with "open" MRIs that are not as closed off.

  • yeah it's a little uncomfortable. for me, it hurts to lay flat on my back. for some reason it bothers my lower back. and the machine does make like a loud whooshing/thumping noise when it's on. I'm pretty sure you have to keep your eyes closed too but I can't remember.

  • You lay very still in a tube machine and hear very loud banging noises for about 20 minutes or so. If you're claustrophic, it might be hard. But I think it might also depend what part of your body they are doing the images of. For me, it was my brain, so I was in the machine up to my waist. You just have to think pleasant thoughts!
  • Pretty much what all the PP mentioned.  However, if you don't like small spaces you may want something to relax you.  They gave me something to take prior to arriving (someone had to drive me home though because of it).
