Anyone Have Urine Taken From Catheter

I may have to get this done tomorrow b/c I have some symptoms of a UTI and I cant give them a good clean urine sample.  Please give me your experiences. I'm scared!

Re: Anyone Have Urine Taken From Catheter

  • I did when I was pregnant with my daughter. They needed a clean catch because I was showing signs of HELLP.

Totally not a big deal - you feel the catheter going in but it doesn't hurt......just a little uncomortable. And really, you have to throw all modesty out the window. LOL

    Good luck!

  • I have had a MILLION uti's and had them draw urine from a catheter it's very easy, doesn't hurt and takes only a minute. You may feel like you have to "go" right after but that feeling goes away soon after! Good luck!

  • honestly, it wasn't as bad as I thought shoving a tube up my pee hole would be.  take it how you may, but I also have a low tolerance to pain and procedures, and it wasn't too bad for me.

  • I put catheters in all the time...I am an ER nurse.  When we just need a straight cath (for a "clean" speciman) we use the smallest catheters.  Hopefully you have a nice nurse who will do the same and use a small catheter!   Doesn't really hurt (yes, I've had it done to me twice) - but sometimes a burning pressure.  Good luck!

  • yeah, the idea is worse than it is, it doesn't take very long at the worst you may feel a little pinch and it's over fast!  But yeah modesty during and after, kiss it goodbye.

  • it's not that bad... I straight-cath every 2 hours. Wink

its just a bit harder self-cathing when pregnant (due to the pressure) but the nurse/doctor is trained.

  • It is definitely an experience. I had to be cath'd when I was about 12 weeks because my uterus was on my bladder and prevented me from going. The cath going in is a bit awkward and uncomfortable, but going is easy. When the cath comes out is a bit uncomfortable, but not terrible. I had to be straight cath'd a few more times until everything "worked itself out", and that was actually a lot better than the balloon cath.

Good luck. Just make sure to drink a lot of fluids and maybe some cranberry juice so you do not get another UTI since cathing can sometimes lead to more UTIs.
