BFing - is this normal and WWYD question

So the baby is not really that into the boob, which is the complete opposite of his older brother who nursed pretty much round the clock the first three months. This guy, not so much. He nurses on one side only for less than 10 minutes minutes every 1.5-2 hours during the day with a couple 3-5 hour streches at night. He's gaining weight on track (at least by my calculations - he has his 2 month appt on Monday so will confirm then) and has plenty of wet and poopy diapers so it seems he is getting enough, but it feels like that just isn't possible from how little he nurses.

Was anyone else's LO like this? Pedi's advice at one month was to try to stretch the feedings to every two hours so that he'd nurse longer each session to ensure he's getting the proper balance of foremilk/hindmilk, but how do you stretch out a feeding without upsetting the babe? When the kid's hungry, he's hungry and I don't want to torture him...

  • Riley was JUST like that, which also was the opposite of Peyton.  It seemed like she liked to snack more than sit down and eat.  She is still the same way at 1 year old and is developing and growing just fine.

I would let him eat when and the amount that he wants and then address it if he isn't growing.

  • I say if he's gaining weight, keep doing what you're doing!  He could be an extremely efficient nurser :)
  • Charlie's MO was frequent but short nursing sessions. He rarely took more than one side in a session. He wasn't a marathon nurser.  He gained weight really well so I kept up with the nursing on demand.

He's probably just really efficient.  Doesn't sound like there is anything wrong.

  • this is how brooklyn was for the most part - she was quick about it but stretched it out more like every 3 hours.
  • Thanks ladies, glad to know other babies are the same. In a way, it's a little harder with number two since I base normal on the first and number two is the complete opposite. Plus My lovely mother (who didn't bf either of her children) is constantly giving me doubts with all of her wisdom. Little guy was fussy today & she told me I should try giving him formula since he was probably hungry. I think it may be time to fire the free help.

  • You crack me up A.  I'm glad you can get outside assurance from mom's who had a different bf experience but who won't push formula on you. ;)

Aaron was like that.  He was super efficient and I knew more the second time around, so I think I taught a proper latch a lot earlier.
