Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swaddling past 3-4 months?

What is your take on swaddling past 3 or 4 months? I know I have read that it's "bad" but can't remember why exactly. I don't see any end in sight for DD--I'd be afraid of how she will sleep without it!

  • Our pediatrician said to stop at 6 months but we had to de-swaddle earlier (4 months, 1 week) because LO figured out how to get out of the swaddle and was pulling the fabric over his face.

  • My pedi said swaddling is fine when I went to his 4 month appt.  he has since been deswaddled, but as far as I heard from him, it's perfectly OK to do.  You just need to be careful if they are getting out of the swaddle or are rolling over when swaddled.
  • Thanks! I am afraid to de-swaddle for fear or making DD's sleep go from bad to worse :)

  • We still swaddle but LO fights to get his hands out. So... we swaddle leaving one arm out and if he's wiggly once he's asleep we'll free his other arm for him.

For us the swaddle helps to start sleep, but LO always kicks his feet out anyways!

  • What blankets are you using that are big enough to swaddle a 4-5 month old?
