If your LO has Milk/Soy Protein Allergies...

Tell me about his/her symptoms.  My story is kinda long, but bottom line, I am curious if constipation was a sign of a soy allergy for anyone else?

I EBF/EP for about 6 weeks.  As soon as I introduced one formula bottle a day, he had blood in his diaper.  Immediately after switching to soy formula while supplementing, he was fine.  Then we went to soy formula exclusively.  He was constipated for about a week and a half (hard stools).  Then we went to hypoallergenic.  He was normal within a day.

Pedi suggested trying soy again at 3 months with the hope that he'd react better now that he's older and is used to formula.

He's only been on soy for less than a week but has been constipated ever since.  Prune juice seems to be helping temporarily but when I stopped, it got worse again.  On top of that, his "baby acne" is all of a sudden flaring up, which makes me think it's not just baby acne.

Please share your experiences!  TIA!

Re: If your LO has Milk/Soy Protein Allergies...

  • For us, the milk and soy protein intolerance showed up at 3 months.  DS was pretty much fine before that (although I always suspected that soy made him gassy and fussy).  The big symptoms for us were green, runny stools with mucous and blood in them, as well as inconsolable crying after I ate large amounts of soy (like a soy burger).  DS never had constipation.  Oh, but he did also have flare-ups of his baby acne and eczema.  So I think it's a possibility.

  • DD had the same reaction to soy so we stuck with the hypoallergenic formula.  it is expensive but worth it for her happiness.  GL!
