DD is 3 weeks old today! For the last 4 evenings, she has had episodes where she is alert from 8:30pm to 11:30pm kicking and screaming, arms flailing around. We tried the 5 S, made sure her diapers are changed, and we just keep feeding her since that was the only thing that would quiet her down. She normally eats 2.5 oz every 3 hours, but during these episodes, she would eat about 4-5 oz. I'm hoping this is not colic, since that would be more of a headache to deal with. I'm already at my wits end and exhausted from the last 4 nights. DH would walk her around the house and soothe her, which would work for a few minutes at a time only. Should we let her cry it out for 15 min? Should we up her feeding amount? She is also gassy too. We've tried Colic Calm, Little Tummies gripe water, and mylicon.
During the day she's an angel and normally sleeps well, waking only to eat every 3 hours. Do you think she is sleeping too much during the day and making it up during the evenings?
Please help!
Re: 3 week growth spurt or colic?
I don't have an answer for you if it's colic or a growth spurt, but DD has a time at night where she's wide awake and fusses and cries off and on. Like last night she woke up from her late afternoon nap around 9ish and didn't fall asleep for the night until 1:30am! It was the 2nd night in a row she has done this. She's fine during the day. Can sleep 3-4 hours at a time for her naps. She doesn't get fussy at all...but when night falls, watch out! lol I wouldn't say it's colic though. I heard a lot of babies have their hours at night where they are "out of control".
I wouldn't say your LO is sleeping too much during the day either. I heard it's worse if your LO is overtired at night. I keep telling myself it will get better...but it's really hard when night time rolls around and I'm at my wits end.
It's so hard to tell in the beginning if its a growth spurt or just gas or hunger or overtiredness.
But my DS was colicky. It started right after week 2. All of a sudden he would just scream for hours. and hours and hours. He cried 6 hours one day. We would have to take him in the car at midnight or 1am some nights in the middle of snowstorms to get him to stop crying.( he was born in Dec) He barely slept, we had to hold him 24/7 He hated his bouncy, crib, pack n play, swing etc.
Part of his issue we later learned was reflux. At 2 months he was put on zantac for awhile, then that stopped working so we switched to prevacid and that helped alot. The first 3 months were hell i will not lie to you. But I guess I would talk to your pedi to see what he/she thinks.
If it is colic it will go away b/w 3 and 4 months. You just have to be patient and do everything you can to help DD out. Like I said for us that meant holding him 24/7. He did not transition to a crib until he was 5 months old. But he did it with no problems. IF your LO is colic my best advise to you is throw away all the damn sleep books and general parenting tips b/c your LO will not follow any of those schedules until the colic passes. I drove myself nuts worrying that he was not sleeping like other babies his age or he was not on a schedule and we did not have a routine. Looking back how in the hell could we put him on any type of schedule. Oh well. Live and learn. If I have another colicky baby I won't freak out as much.
He is a very happy and healthy boy and I ALMOST forget how hard it was. Hang in there
