Exclusive Pumpers..can you help me?

I have been breastfeeding exclusively but pumping just a few times a day for while I am at work...  Due to blood in my daughters stool and food allergies she has to go on a special formula for a month to let her body heal.  I am on a very strict diet, but they want me to keep pumping so she can go back to breastfeeding after a month.

My question is how many times a day will I need to pump to keep up with her milk supply??  I am back to work now and was only pumping twice there...but think I will have to increase that.  I am really concerned about keeping my supply up b/c our insurance isn't covering this special formula, and we NEED to go back to breast milk after the month is over.  HOPEFULLY!  Plus, I will miss it!  :)  Any advice would be so great!  Thank you.

  • I pump except for her first morning feeding, and after that I pump every 3 hours during the day, so 5-6 pumps plus one nursing session which I pump after because I have so much extra from the long night. I think you would need to pump at least 6-7 times as a minimum to keep up supply, especially if you won't be doing it overnight. However, if she wakes to eat overnight I would pump then for sure, I think thats the best way to keep up b/c thats when a lot of people make the most milk.

  • I would be pumping as many times of the day as you're feeding your LO.  So if your LO gets 3 bottles while you're at work you need to pump 3 times.  And, of couse you'll need to pump in the morning and at night time.

    Good luck!
