Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Vaccines

Do any of you worry about the vaccines your LO gets?  So far, I have stuck to the regular schedule.  However, my coworker was just telling me that her nephew died 9 months ago of SIDS after receiving his 2 months shots earlier that day.  I'm terrified now. At the same time, I don't want my DS to contract diseases either. How do you solve that conflict within yourself if it exists?

Re: Vaccines

  • never in my life have I heard there is a connection between vaccines and SIDS. Maybe I a missing something but SIDS is an unexplained cause of death.

My child get vaccines however on a spread out program getting no more than 2 individual vaccines in a month

  • Completely my opinion but it was more than likely just a coincidence. Ive never heard of anything negative coming from vaccines. They may be a little under the weather for a day or two after but IMO it is well worth it to know that DS has had his preventative immunizations.
  • You are correct, that there hasn't been anything proven about the relationship between the two, but many parents out there that have lost a child to SIDS have related the two.  Here is a website that talks about it https://www.thinktwice.com/sids.htm

  • we are spacing DD's out, our pedi does the schedule that the parent is comfortable with.....so we do this:

DTap, polio, HIB, rotavirus = 1 shot and 1 oral at 2, 4 and 6 months

pneumococcal (PCV7) = 1 shot on alternating months (3,5 months etc) until complete

DD has never had a fever, been fussy or been sick after any of her shots.  it is an extra drive to the pedi on the alternate months that she doesn't have a full visit but the nurse administers the shot and it only takes a few minutes.

  • I've always felt the same way, too, and that is why I went ahead with the regular schedule, but for some reason I was really freaked out after the 2 month shots. DS was fine, but that nagging thought hasn't left my mind. Then, my coworker tells me about her nephew just yesterday and I am left with a sinking feeling.  Is it just me overworrying, or is this one of those instincts I was told to listen to?

  • It's definitely a very personal decision whether or not to vax or delay vaxs. I personally had a very bad feeling before we went for DD's 4 month shots. I decided to cancel the appt. and do more research on alternate schedules. Our pedi will not do an alternate schedule, and DH and I have decided that that is the route we want to take. So we are finding a new pedi.  I feel very good about my decision and feel like we made the right choice for our DD.

Concerning the diseases - we rarely leave the house. DD and I are home all day and she's almost never around other children. I hardly think she'll catch a life-threatening illness from the grocery store, especially if I'm wearing her in a carrier. Besides, she's not not getting the shots, she's just not getting them all at once.

  • Thanks, Johnnygurl. I might discuss that with my pedi, too.

I recently wrote a blog post about this exact thing. https://lifewithvivianlem.blogspot.com/2010/04/finding-alternative.html

Honestly, the 2 month shots are the worst. (For moms that is) DS freaked out when he got his and I even cried cuz I felt so bad for him! Then it was time for his 4 month shots and I was freaking out but to my surprise he hardly reacted. He cried for like 10 seconds but as soon as I picked him up he was fine.

  • I asked for DDs shots to be spread out, not because of SIDS or Autism, but mainly because I think that's a lot of shots to give a little baby all at once, IMHO.

My pedi is great and is accommodating us with a spread out schedule similar to the one posted above, and I feel much more comfortable now.

  • We are following Dr. Sears' selective vaccine schedule from The Vaccine Book. Some of the ingredients in vaccines are just not safe - no amount of "medical" advise will ever replace common sense that injecting your child with aluminum, mercury, monkey and/or bovine and/or human cells are a good idea. We declined all unnecessary vaccines and are only getting HiB and Pc starting at 4 months, DTaP in fall, and tetanus at 5 years old. We declined all others until he is older when we will consider the hepatitis vaccs and MMR, which we are getting seperately.
  • and we are waiting on the Hep.B shots....pedi said it is fine because DD is not going to daycare.

i questioned it prior to her birth after i found out it was recommended to be done with the vit.k right after birth.  dr agreed with me that it does not need to be done right away, i don't have it.  she only got the vit. k at time of birth.

  • I think I am going the route of spreading them out, but I will read the Dr. Sears book as well, thanks for the recommendations/advice.

  • I am totally all for vax's. If you want to do them more spread out and your pedi does that, go for it. I have done so much research, and come from a long line of doctors (my mom, dad, sister, and brother in law) and all say its totally safe. I LOVE my pedi- he's very up front about giving all the info on the vax's, but if you choose not to- he will not be your pedi.

  • I know there are people who make a connection between vax and SIDS, but I believe it is simply coincidence. SIDS deaths happen about the same time that vax are due. This article in Parent's magazine, I felt, did a good job in weighing the debate.

totally off topic but my DH is a HUGE wings fan and would totally make dd wear that if he knew it existed. lol

  • I hate that "spreading them out" is becoming more and more the norm, and that these types of message boards are playing a part in that.

That's a great article and I 100% agree that it's purely coincidence based upon the time in which infants are most at risk for SIDS.

I feel very strongly about getting DD vaccinated based upon the American Academy of Pediatrics timeline. We will not be deviating from this schedule at any point in time.
