Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Powdered Formula : (

I bought powder today - I can no longer justify the expense of RTF. When I was pumping, we only gave 2 bottles of formula a day. Now we're 100% formula and he eats a ton.

Anyway, any recs on how to prepare-- One bottle at a time - make a bunch at once? Once its prepared, how long is it good for?  Tap water, spring water????

Re: Powdered Formula : (

  • We use filtered tap water. I make the bottles as I need them. And I shake the formula in the bottle.

It's good in the fridge for 24 hours. Room temp, it's good for 2 hours. If baby drank some, then it's good for 1 hour.

  • Here's what we do:

Make a batch once at night.  This is because he goes to daycare and we have to send pre-made bottles along.  I also like this because it reduced the bubbles in the formula from shaking them.

Once prepared, it is good for 24 hours in fridge, 2 hours at room temp but only 1 hour once LO starts drinking.  Read the can to confirm, but that is how ours works.

    We use tap water.

  • I bought a formula mixing pitcher and I make bottles ahead of time and keep them in the fridge. Pop off the top and put them in the bottle warmer as we need them. Once formula is mixed and refridgerated its good for 24 hours. When I get home from work, I make enough to get us through the rest of the night and into the next evening.

  • We have a big water filter container from Pur or Brita that used to be in our fridge. However, since I've been using it for making formula, we keep it on the kitchen counter and use water out of there to make formula. I use a Dr. Brown's formula pitcher to mix ~1 day's worth at a time (which is good refrigerated for 24 hours). Then, if we're going out I just take bottles of the filtered water and tupperware containers of the powder to mix when needed since it's only good for 2 hours after mixing if not refrigerated.

When we're home, I microwave a cup of water (I reuse the same cup and the same water so we're not wasting it) for 2 minutes then float the bottle in it until the formula is warm.

  • We do a whole day at a time as well. Mix it by using the Dr. Brown's pitcher (@$16) you get let air/gas bubbles using the pitcher vs shaking. Divide into individual servings.

If we go out we just pop a whole bottle with formula already mix up in it into a can cooler (the coolers are kept in the freezer and are usually used for soda cans) and then that and the bottle's "guts"(guts in a baggy) into the diaper bag. Now, if we are going for the whole day, we'll use mini cooler.

DS is fine with the bottle being cold when we are out. He just drinks it slower.

We have in the past taken the bottles with the filtered water in them and the powder separate, but it proves rather messy and a pain to have to measure it,etc.
