undescended testicle

Hello - does anyone have any experience with their son having an undescended testicle?  My son is 4.5 months old and it still has not descended yet.  My pedi suggests seeing a pediatric urologist which he's already under his care for a multicystic displastic kidney.  I'm wondering if both of these things are related??

Re: undescended testicle

  • my son has a multlicystic dysplastic kidney & had an undescended testicle, hydrocele & hernia all on the same side (right). the conditions are definitely related as  MCDKs have associated urological defects. my son had surgery at 5 months to seal the hernia & bring the testicle down. the hernia made the surgery an immediate need. i actually found the hernia changing a diaper one day, so the urologist said if we have to do surgery on that he might as well bring the testicle down then. if he hadn't had a hernia, the doctor said most testicles descend by themselves within a year, after that they are unlikely to & need surgical correction. it was a relatively quick procedure. though of course any surgery is stressful! feel free to ask any more questions!

  • My little guy has a left multicystic kidney and his undescended testicle is also on the left.  I never thought until now that they could be related.  Thanks so much for the insight.    Our pedi also told us that it would descend on its own but it hasn't so far.  Does 'hernia' stick out or something, that is how you found it?  I don't think he has this though.

  • We had an inguinal hernia and undescended testicle on the right side. The hernia showed up when Nate was about 4 weeks old and was very large. It looked like a blob about 1.5 inches up from his penis. It was about 2" long by 1.25" wide.

Since the hernia was so large we had it fixed along with bringing the testicle down on March 30th. Normally the doctor would wait to fix the hernia until he was at least 6 months old because he would be stronger for the anethesia and that it is easy to damage the testicle when they are that small. The procedure was pretty simple and he went home the same day. It didn't seem to be painful for him at all.

If you can wait to have it brought down, I would since it could affect your son's fertility in the future.

  • I will ask the urologist his advice about his 'shy teste' when I bring him to have another test done on his kidney.  This test involves injecting him with isotopic dye to determine if there is any fuction in this kidney which we know there isn't but apparently they have to do this test anyway because if there is even slight fuction, that could lead to blockage and problems later.  We attempted this test when he was 8 weeks old but his veins rejected the dye b/c they were too tiny.  They strap him down for 30 minutes and watch where the dye goes on a monitor.  Needless to say I am not looking forward to this test.  Laf82005 - did your son have this test?

  • My son's right testicle is undescended, and his left went back up!  We've seen a surgeon once, and she wants to see him back at 7 months (which is next month).  I'm guessing she is going to just want to "tack them down" which I'd rather do sooner than later....I really don't want to chance him having a memory of that!
  • Dean had both testicles undescended. He had surgery for the left one in February and is having surgery on the right one next week. Our urologist says to get them down earlier than later for a variety of reasons, so we did that.
  • My ds had an undecended testicle.. we waited until he was a year.. it still had not come down so we were refured to a urologist... and he had surgery to bring it down when he was almost a year and a half. My ds did not have any issues with his kidneys.

  • yes, my son had to have the procedure (i think) you're describing to test reflux..the VCUG. he had that at 4months. it was to determine whether there was any reflux on his healthy kidney. he had a previous u/s which showed potential reflux so they put him on antibiotics & then did this procedure. luckily, the VCUG results were great--no reflux on kidney. again, this was a difficult procedure--due to him having to be strapped down to this board, it looks kinda barbaric--but again, it was over fast. i nursed him immediately afterward & he calmed right down. good luck!

ps- you would know if your LO had a hernia, it appeared as the earlier poster described, a huge mass in his scrotum

  • Ds had kidney reflux and both testes undecended. One decended spontaneously around 3 months. He had surgery on the other around 18months then develpoed a hydrocele/hernia and had to have an operation on the other. From what my urologist told me some sort of hernia always happens with an undecended testicle.
