I've got a thumbsucker!

DS has always LOVED to suck on things.  When we first met after my c-section, he tried to suck on my nose.  So, he's been really into pacifiers but the past few days, he's seemed to be weaning himself off of them.  Last night, I woke up in the middle of the night and saw him on the video monitor sucking away on his thumb very happily, looking like a thumb-sucking professional.  I'm glad he's found his thumb and that it makes him happy, but also... not sure how I feel about this.  Anyone else have a thumb sucker?

Re: I've got a thumbsucker!

  • My DD just started sucking her thumb a few days ago. I was a thumb sucker and had braces for years. I don't think I am excited about this new development but it is so cute when she does it.

  • I have on too.  I have been trying to give her a paci for the longest time but she won't have it.  The funniest is when she can't find her thumb so she sucks on her palm.  I'm not sure how I feel about the thumbsucking but for now she's able to self soothe so I'm okay with it especially at night.

  • I do!  My daughter LOVES her thumb and will not take a pacifier.  She was trying from day one.  I love that she does it, especially since she sleeps so well at night - she's sttn since about 7 1/2 weeks when she started finding her thumb on her own.

  • DS wants to suck his thumb but we pull it out.  I don't want a thumb sucker.  I think I pull the thumb out 157 a day.  And he's at daycare from 7:30-5. :-)  They pull it out as well.  It's an uphill battle, but I'm determined.

Fortunately, he only does it when he's upset.  I've never seen him go for it while napping and he's still in the swaddle at night.

  • DD has been a finger sucker since birth but a thumb sucker about a month, the last pic in my siggy is her sucking on her thumb, though its hard to see!
  • we have one. I prefer it to the paci. I actually have an ultrasound pic of DS sucking his thumb.
