Some budget-friendly nursery guides tell you to skip the changing table and just use the top of the dresser since eventually you won't need the changing table anymore. I mentioned it to DH yesterday b/c we happened to be in the baby furniture aisle. I told him we could mix and match furniture, not necessarily use all the baby furniture, etc. When I mentioned the dresser as the changing table, he said, "Great, so the baby could fall off the dresser!" I didn't really see it that way. It's not like you leave the baby unsupervised on top of the dresser while you're changing them. But, of course, now it makes me wonder and think it's a bad idea.
So, did you get a changing table or do you use another piece of furniture as the changing table?
Re: another one - changing table or dresser?
SIL uses the dresser w/ the changing table pad on top (used w/ both children), and it has worked out for them just fine. I actually don't know many people that use a specific changing table just for changing. Like you said, you will never leave the child unattended, and besides, there is just as much chance for the baby falling off the table as there is off the dresser! I think going more budget-friendly is the best way to go.

I used a normal dresser with the changing pad on top. I don't really see how this is more or less dangerous than a traditional changing table. The changing pads usually bring a strap with a little screw that you can use to attach it to the wall behind whatever piece of furniture you're using, whether it's a regular dresser or an actual changing table.
To be honest, you'd be surprised at how little you might actually use the changing table. We use it maybe once or twice a day, but more often than not she gets changed in her crib, on our bed, etc.
This for us too!
Exactly! We have a dresser with a changing pad on top and I think I have used it maybe twice. We went with a regular dresser so it could grow with the baby.

This thread and the other nursery one have been so super helpful.
Never even thought about this...
Well you're not supposed to leave a baby unsupervised on a changing table either, LOL. A baby could fall from any place, iykwim.
We used a dresser with a changing pad on top. It worked great and we didn't have a piece of non essential (to us) baby furniture clogging up space.
Just make sure your dresser is wide enough to fit the changing pad on it. We measured a changing pad and a changing table at BRU to get an idea of what we needed width wise.
We also placed a changing pad on a dresser. I liked having the extra space on top and storage on bottom. We had this setup for Eli only. For Chelsea and Benjamin - I have neither :0(
