Babies: 3 - 6 Months

water and surgery

I have an appt. with the surgeon on Weds, but I thought I'd ask here too.  My DS needs to have surgery to correct an issue (minor, but still.. surgery...) and I'm nervous about the feeding issue.  He is EBF and I read that they can only have BM 4 hours before surgery.  Another Dr. I talked to said I could give him a tiny amount of water 2 hours before his surgery to get something in his stomach to tide him over, but I thought no water for babies.

How am I going to get him through those 4 hours?  He's going to be hungry and is going to freak out!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm a nervous wreck already.  From everything I read, the surgery is much more difficult on the parents then the kids...  :( My poor Doozer...

Re: water and surgery

  • At our 4 month check up our Pedi said it was okay to give her water sometimes.  I think since he is having surgery and the Dr said it was okay; he should be okay.

  • My DS just had surgery one week ago.  He actually did fine during those 4 hours,  I was really surprised.  But he does go 8 hrs at night w/o eating.  They told me he could have Pedialyte (sp?) 3 hrs prior to surgery but I didn't give him any.  Good luck with the surgery.
  • I don't have any advice to offer, I just wanted to say that I hope his surgery goes well.
