Hi ladies,
FI and I found out today we are SIUGR. Are there any SIUGR mommas here? can you tell me about what we can potentially expect?
Thank you so much.

Re: IUGR mommas
I'm not sure what "S" IUGR is, but my daughter was IUGR due to a velamentous cord insertion. We were lucky that she always had good blood flow and even though she was very small, she did continue to grow. I was induced at 34w5d due to pre-e and she weighed 3lbs 12oz. I had recieved steroid shots at 33w so neither baby needed breathing help. She'll be a year old in a week (tear) and is still measuring in the less than 5th percentile, but is very healthy, active and meeting all milestones.
Do you have any idea what is causing it? I think there are several different reasons it could happen, mine just being 1. Hopefully the other ladies have different perspectives for you.
Hi there. I'm also not familiar with "S"IUGR, but my son was IUGR as well, born at almost 32w6d weighing 2lb 14oz. In our case it was found that there were multiple problems with the placenta and clotting, but IUGR can be caused by many factors, as the previous poster mentioned.
It is also managed differently by different physicians, especially in light of the fact that different factors may be causing it. In many instances it can mean that the baby will likely be intentionally delivered prematurely when the OB feels the baby will grow better receiving nutrition and support outside the womb (again, this isn't the case for every baby). Many OBs will prepare for a possible early delivery by giving steroid injections, so that fetal lung development accelerates and prepares the baby for an early arrival. Also, because of the steroids and the fact that these babies have been stressed in utero, they are often better prepared for delivery and life outside the womb than premature babies delivered unexpectedly.
In my son's case, even though he was extremely small and fragile, he was able to breathe room oxygen on his own, and began bottle feedings on his second day (only 2cc, haha, but it was amazing all the same!). He was discharged only 3 weeks later at 3lb 10oz, and has thrived at home. At 4 months he is close the 10th percentile for growth, and is achieving milestones as expected thus far.
IUGR is very scary to hear as a diagnosis, but we tried to view it as a blessing to be able to prepare for it in every way possible. I wish you the very best with your pregnancy, and will keep you in my T&P. IUGR babies are small, but they are mighty!

i guess we might qualify... i have a clotting disorder, APS, which causes my placentas to malfunction. bummer- right?
we knew ahead of time (due to the loss of my son at 21 weeks the year prior) that i had the disorder, so i was on blood thinners the next time around with my dd. i was having bi-weekly ultrasounds until 20 weeks, then i was getting weekly ultrasounds. after 24 weeks i was getting twice weekly... i forget what they called it... basically where they check the blood flow and size each time, and getting bi-weekly ultrasounds.
i was admitted at around 25wks for pre-e and developed hellp (again) at 27w4d. they checked my platelets that morning, gave me a transfusion, and wheeled me in for a c/s around noon! my daughter weighed 1lb 11oz... and was smaller than some 25 weekers! she gained weight well though, and if not for a pneumonia like infection while on the vent, would have had a completely "uneventful" nicu stay. (the infection caused her to be on the vent longer, causing damage, which meant she needed to go home on oxygen after spending 98 days in the nicu.)
now she's 10 months old, doing awesome! no problems to speak of... and weighs around 15lbs last time we checked. she's in the 10th percentile for her adjusted age (her age minus the months she was early. so she's 7ish months adjusted) and the 5th percentile for her actual age. both of our families have small babies/kids so we're pretty happy with where she is right now.
good luck! keep us posted!
